According to OCSD spokesperson, Lt. Jeff Hallock,  at approximately 9:50 a.m., deputies responded to a robbery in progress at the Verizon Retail Store.  The suspects entered the store and demanded cellular phones while holding a lone employee at gunpoint.  The suspects fled the store and left the area in the Nissan sedan.  During the preliminary investigation, a witness provided deputies with a suspect vehicle description.  Several minutes later, deputies saw the vehicle occupied by Mason, Carr and Jackson.  Mason and Jackson were taken into custody near the vehicle after a short foot pursuit; Carr was located in the area approximately two hours later following set of a perimeter and systematic search by deputies.  There are no additional suspects believed to be outstanding.

The property taken in the robbery was approximately 40-50 cellular phones; however, investigators are continuing to work with store employees to determine the exact loss.  Several of the stolen cellular phones taken were recovered near the vehicle as well as a handgun suspected to have been used in the robbery. Preliminarily, investigators believe the suspects may be connected to another recent robbery and theft in the area.

According to the Orange County District Attorney's office, Peter Gregory Chadwick, 50, is charged with one felony count of murder.  He was out of custody after posting $1 million bail on Dec. 21, 2012, and failed to appear for a scheduled pre-trial hearing today.

On the morning of Oct. 10, 2012, Chadwick is accused of murdering his wife, Quee Chadwick, in their Newport Beach home over a dispute regarding a possible divorce and related financial issues. He is accused of then disposing of the victim's body in an unknown location.

That afternoon, neither Chadwick nor the victim arrived to pick up their children from school. Rancho Santa Margarita, CA -  Thuy Thi Le was sentenced Friday January 23 to 11 years to life in state prison for attempting to murder her two young children by stabbing them while they were asleep.

According to the Orange Country District Attorunery's office,  Le, 43, Westminster, was found guilty by a jury Feb. 4, 2014, of two felony counts each of attempted murder, and child abuse and endangerment with sentencing enhancements for the personal use of a deadly weapon and committing great bodily injury.
On Oct. 27, 2014, a unanimous jury found the sentencing enhancement for premeditation and deliberation for the attempted murder charge to be true following a retrial of the sentencing enhancement as a former jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict.

At approximately 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 16, 2009, Le spent the night at a family member's home with her children, 5-year-old Child Doe #1 and 3-year-old Child Doe #2. Her boyfriend, who is the father of the children, was at work. Le slept with her two children together on a mattress in the family room. The defendant went into the kitchen, picked up a knife from the sink, walked back over to the children, stabbed each of them in the chest, and then stabbed herself nearly 25 times. She then called 911.

Child Doe #1 suffered a stab wound to the chest and the knife penetrated her heart. Child Doe #1 was sent to University of California Irvine Medical Center and underwent emergency open-heart surgery to save her life. Child Doe #2 suffered a stab wound to the chest area, but the stab wound missed any vital organs.

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA - Law enforcement is seeking the public's help identifying potential additional victims of Qayed Murtaza Shareef with sexually assaulting minors and possessing child pornography.

According to the Orange County District Attorney's office. Qayed Murtaza Shareef, 39, Aliso Viejo, was charged today with 30 felony counts of lewd acts with a child under 14, one felony count of using a minor for sex acts, one felony count of distributing pornography to a minor, one felony count of possession or control of child pornography, with a sentencing enhancement for substantial sexual conduct with a child under 14 years old and committing lewd acts upon multiple victims. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 752 years to life in state prison. He is being held on $2 million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon, Jan. 23, 2015

On multiple occasions between Dec. 25, 2013, and Dec. 29, 2013, Shareef is accused of contacting 10-year-old John Doe #1 and 9-year-old John Doe #2 using an online application called Tango. The defendant is accused of connecting to the program using a fake name of Jeremy Stevens.
The defendant is accused of having sexually explicit conversations with the victims through the application. He is then accused of convincing and directing John Doe #1 and John Doe #2, who live in Virginia, to commit sex acts with each other and to record photos and videos of the sex acts using their ASUS tablet. Shareef is accused of directing the victims to send the photos and videos of themselves to the defendant's Tango account.

Between Dec. 25, 2013, and Dec. 29, 2013, the defendant is accused of recording sex acts performed on himself and sending it to the victims along with adult pornography.
The defendant did not have physical contact with the victims but California Penal Code section 288 states that lewd and lascivious acts upon a child is committed when a defendant willfully causes a child to touch the child's own body or the body of another with the intent of arousing, appealing to, or gratifying the lust, passions, and sexual desires of the defendant or the child.
On Dec. 30, 2013, the mother of one of the victims found the videos on the child's tablet device and reported the crime to her local law enforcement agency in Virginia.
On Jan. 21, 2015, Shareef was arrested at his residence by members of the Orange County Child Exploitation Task Force (OCCETF), including investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD), and the Newport Beach Police Department (NBPD).

Nathan Leroux, a Third Member of International Computer Hacking Ring Pleads Guilty to Hacking

Nathan Leroux, pleaded guilty to charges related to cyber theft of software and data related to the Xbox One gaming console and Xbox Live online gaming system, and popular games such as the “FIFA” online soccer series; “Call of Duty:  Modern Warfare 3;” and “Gears of War 3.”

Posted By CotBlogzz

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA -  Nathan Leroux, 20,  a third member of an international computer hacking ring has pleaded guilty to conspiring to break into computer networks of prominent technology companies to steal more than $100 million in intellectual property and other proprietary data, according to announcement by  Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.
Nathan Leroux, 20, of Bowie, Maryland, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit computer intrusions and criminal copyright infringement based on his role in the cyber theft of software and data related to the Xbox One gaming console and Xbox Live online gaming system, and popular games such as the “FIFA” online soccer series; “Call of Duty:  Modern Warfare 3;” and “Gears of War 3.”  Leroux has been in custody since attempting to flee into Canada from Buffalo, New York, on June 16, 2014.  A sentencing hearing is set before U.S. District Judge Judge Gregory M. Sleet of the District of Delaware on May 14, 2015.
Sanadodeh Nesheiwat, 28, of Washington, New Jersey, and David Pokora, 22, of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, previously pleaded guilty to the same conspiracy charge on Sept. 30, 2014.  They remain in custody pending their sentencing hearings, which are scheduled for April 2015.  Pokora’s guilty plea is believed to have been the first conviction of a foreign-based individual for hacking into U.S. businesses to steal trade secret information.  Charges against a fourth defendant, Austin Alcala, 19, of McCordsville, Indiana, remain pending.
According to Leroux’s admissions in connection with his guilty plea, he was part of the hacking conspiracy between January 2011 and September 2012.  During that period, hacking group members located in the United States and abroad gained unauthorized access to computer networks of various companies, including Microsoft Corporation, Epic Games Inc., Valve Corporation and Zombie Studios.  The conspirators accessed and stole unreleased software, software source code, trade secrets, copyrighted and pre-release works, and other confidential and proprietary information.  Members of the conspiracy also allegedly stole financial and other sensitive information relating to the companies – but not their customers – and certain employees of such companies.
Specifically, the data theft targeted software development networks containing source code, technical specifications and related information for Microsoft’s then-unreleased Xbox One gaming console, as well as intellectual property and proprietary data related to Xbox Live and games developed for that online gaming system.
Leroux admitted in court that he and others used the stolen intellectual property to build, and attempt to sell, counterfeit versions of the Xbox One console before its public release in November 2013.  In July 2013, the FBI intercepted a counterfeit console built by Leroux, which was destined for the Republic of Seychelles.
Leroux also admitted that he developed a software exploit that allowed him and others to generate millions of “coins” for the FIFA soccer games playable on the Xbox Live platform.  These coins are the virtual, in-game currency used to build a “FIFA Ultimate Team” in the games.  Without the authorization of Electronic Arts, the intellectual property rights holder to the FIFA games, Leroux and others sold bulk quantities of the “FIFA coins” via online black markets.
The value of the intellectual property and other data stolen by the hacking ring, as well as the costs associated with the victims’ responses to the conduct, is estimated to range between $100 million and $200 million.  To date, the United States has seized over $620,000 in cash and other proceeds related to the charged conduct.
This case is being investigated by the FBI, with assistance from the Criminal Division’s Office of International Affairs, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Canada Border Services Agency, the Western Australia Police and the Peel Regional Police of Ontario, Canada.  The case is being prosecuted by Trial Attorney James Silver of the Criminal Division’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward J. McAndrew of the District of Delaware.

Timothy DeFoggi, former acting director of cyber security at HHS sentenced to 25 years for child pornography.

Posted By CotoBlogzz

Timothy DeFoggi, 56, former acting director of cyber security at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services was convicted on Aug. 26, 2014, and was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison today for engaging in a child exploitation enterprise and related charges in connection with his membership in a Tor-network-based child pornography website, according to announcement by representatives of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.
“Using the same technological expertise he employed as Acting Director of Cyber Security at HHS, DeFoggi attempted to sexually exploit children and traffic in child pornography through an anonymous computer network of child predators,” said Assistant Attorney General Caldwell.
According to evidence presented at trial, DeFoggi registered as a member of the Tor-network-based child pornography website on March 2, 2012, and maintained his membership and activity until Dec. 8, 2012, when the website was taken down by the FBI.  The website’s users utilized advanced technological means in order to undermine law enforcement’s attempts to identify them.  The website was accessible only through Tor, an Internet application specifically designed to facilitate anonymous communication.  Acting under the cloak of anonymity, users advised others on best practices to prevent detection by law enforcement, including advice about the proper use of encryption software, techniques to hide or password-protect child pornography collections, and programs to remove data from a user’s computer.
Through the website, DeFoggi accessed child pornography, solicited child pornography from other members, and exchanged private messages with other members in which he expressed an interest in the violent rape and murder of children.  DeFoggi suggested meeting one member in person to fulfill their mutual fantasies to violently rape and murder children.
DeFoggi was the sixth individual to be convicted as part of an ongoing investigation targeting three Tor-network-based child pornography websites.  The websites were run by a single administrator, Aaron McGrath, who was previously convicted in the District of Nebraska of engaging in a child exploitation enterprise in connection with his administration of the websites.  On Jan. 31, 2014, McGrath was sentenced to 20 years in prison by Senior U.S. District Judge Joseph F. Bataillon.
Four other members of the same website as DeFoggi were previously convicted and sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Bataillon in connection with their illegal activity on the site:
  • Jason Flanary, then 42, formerly of Chicago, Illinois, the Philippines, and Guam, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on June 30, 2014.
  • Wesley Cameron, then 22, formerly of Ashford, Alabama, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Oct. 24, 2014.
  • Zackary Austin, 28, formerly of Reno, Nevada, was sentenced to 16 years in prison on Nov. 6, 2014.
  • Charles MacMillan, 29, formerly of Rockville, Maryland, was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Nov. 7, 2014.
