Butch,The Kid and Waldo - Redux
“to me the problem isn't that we're paying our cops too much during their working years. It's that we're not paying them enough”.
August 13, 2007
Covering all the basis, after Butch Cassidy, The Sundance Kid and Waldo, yet one OCR columnist pitches in asking a rhetorical question in the article titled? Do cops make too much money? Local columnist Gordon Dillow wonders if pensions are too high for police officers and deputies.
As Dillow ponders the question, he also considers the political battle between the county Board of Supervisors and the deputies' union over attempts to retroactively scale back the 3-50 pension benefit, which allows a retiring police officer or sheriff's deputy with 30 years on the job to annually collect 90 percent of his highest salary for the rest of his life. Dillow is not “….sure that "3 at 50" is economically or politically sustainable”, but argues that it is not fair to consider a retro-active cut back”.
Then he has a Eureka moment: “to me the problem isn't that we're paying our cops too much during their working years. It's that we're not paying them enough”.
After Dillow presents a compelling argument for pay increases for cops, he concludes that cops are just another commodity: “Because cops are like anything else. You get what you pay for”
We presented a related argument in a recent piece titled: Law Enforcement – Evil, Necessary Evil, Or Noble Profession and Role Model?, reaching a different conclusion: In open societies, we posit that law enforcement follows Winstren’s Law: Law Enforcement Goes Where it is Needed and Stays Where it is Wanted”
Further, when we hear the term “Because XX are like anything else. You get what you pay for”, invariable, we interpret it as a set up, as what usually comes after the sentence is uttered, is an excuse for poor XX management. Has anyone seen Waldo?
