ArchiTexture Dance Company's Mightier Than the Sword: Dancing Volumes for Banned Books Week at Saddleback College September 30, 2007
September 19, 2007
The ArchiTexture Dance Company, in collaboration with the Saddleback College Library, ipresents Mightier Than the Sword: Dancing Volumes for Banned Books Week on September 28-29 & October 5-6 at 8 p.m. and September 30 & October 7 at 2 p.m. at the Saddleback College Library.
The performance will last approximately an hour and a half with no intermission. A guide will take audience members through all three levels of the library to view nine dance pieces based on banned works of literature. This is a site-specific concert, which means that dancers will be performing throughout the library. Locations will include using all three levels of the main staircase for a dance piece based on Dante’s Inferno; a dance based on the novel 1984 that takes place in the computer lab and a poignant duet based on Shakespeare’s tragic Othello in the reference section.
ArchiTexture Dance Company is a site specific contemporary dance company located in Orange County , California , dedicated to exploring the relationships between architecture, environment, and dancing bodies through site specific performances and multi media dance concerts. The company designs modern dance performances in unusual locations, transforming everyday spaces into artistic venues; all rehearsals are held at the location whenever possible, and the dancers adapt their movements to their surroundings, whether performing on concrete, staircases, or even over water! ArchiTexture Dance Company takes dance off of the proscenium stage, removes the red velvet curtains, and finds performance locations in new environments: historic tallships, libraries, art galleries, and parking lots have all served as recent settings for rehearsals and performances.
The dancers quickly adjust to each new location, donning tennis shoes, wearing sunblock in rehearsals, learning to climb aloft, and dancing between bookshelves. Deidre Cavazzi, the company's founder, artistic director, and choreographer, uses the location as a muse, basing her choreography on architectural themes and motifs, finding connections between functional and aesthetic elements of the space, and translating what she finds into movement for her dancers.
Tickets are $10 general and $5 students and can be purchased securely online at http://www.architexturedance.org/performances1.html. Performances dates are: September 28-29 at 8 p.m.; September 30 at 2 p.m.; October 5-6 at 8 p.m.; October 7 at 2:00 p.m.
Saddleback College is located at 28000 Marguerite Pkwy in
