Bella the Movie Hollywood Does not Want You To Watch – Reviewing the Reviewer

October 29, 2007

If you do not like emotional roller coasters with high peaks and low valleys. If you enjoy mindless dialogue, an overabundance of special effects and megabucks Hollywood productions, sequential storytelling and cannot stand subtitles, Bella is definitely not for you, or for Betsy Pickle for that matter. In the Scripps Howard News Service Bella review, Pickle writes : Bella “…is about people making connections, but it's so far removed from how real people behave that it feels disconnected”. Perhaps the “real people” Pickle refers to is the one portrayed by Hollywood in the nuclear proliferation of reality TV shows, such as the Real Housewives of Orange County.

Bella opened this weekend in Orange County at the Regal Theaters hoping to attract enough interest to be picked up for national distribution

Pickle describes the movie as an “earnestly crafted as a feel-good movie, "Bella" is a walk-and-talkathon boasting two fetching stars”. As we watched moviegoers exit the theater discussing the movie, the word most often used to describe it was “different”, implying they were still trying to decide whether they liked it or not.

Pickle writes that “the film shoves in plugs for adoption and raises an alarm about intra-ethnic-group prejudice…..Yet Monteverde's graceless staging and groundless character behavior betray his good intentions, leaving the film less than "bella." Seems like Pickle’s real pickle is not the messenger, but the message celebrating life. As a blogger writes "There has been a problem in the past that good, wholesome family movies have not been played around the country -- only really bad Hollywood junk"
