Liberia tries democracy with new leader – Coto de Caza continues aristocracy with new Leader

In Monrovia, Liberia, “after 14 years of darkness, street lights shine amid the shattered buildings”, writes AP writer Terry Leonard in his article titled Liberia tries democracy with new leader, “ And the new president — the first woman elected to head an African country — stands under an umbrella in the driving rain to launch repairs to a street that seems to have more holes than pavement”, he continues.

In Coto de Caza, after years of closely monitored, cleanly kept bucolic landscape, one finds instead broken pavement (but the association claims to have saved on slurry work), “native” river rock and visibly un-kept areas. In Coto de Caza, the local governing body has been deaf for calls to reform what critics call a corrupt electoral systems. Even after state law was changed to allow for a semblance of direct democracy, the CZ board continues to promote an aristocratic system using a questionable delegate system
