Orange County Sheriff Michael S. Carona to retire – the end of an era

January 14, 2007

It is expected that the embattled Orange County Sheriff Michael Carona will announce his retirement sometime this morning.

After Sheriff Carona was indicted, apparently based solely on testimony obtained from admitted tax evaders and former top aides. , he pleaded not guilty to federal public corruption, conspiracy and witness tampering charges, emphatically stating he does not plan to step down, “… because I am not guilty", he said. He also noted that "In America, all of us as Americans, even the sheriff of Orange County, has the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty”.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors, had been circling the Sheriff’s wagons for months, culminating in a request for him to step down – a request he vowed to fight.

This morning, OCSD spokesperson Michael Schoreder is expect to announce the Sheriff’s retirement, a reversal of positions.
