Its Official – Joe won the Debate according to Smartphone App Developed at UC Davis

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA – According to a smartphone application co-developed by  Amber Boydstun, an assistant professor of political science at the University of California, Davis.  Six in 10 college students say Joe Biden outperformed Paul Ryan in the last  vice presidential debate.
About 1,500 students at campuses across the country participated in the poll, which allows participants to click buttons that say “agree” or “disagree” as well as “dodge” or “spin"

Similar to Dr. Lunz's dials, often featured in FOX News network, the smartphone app allows, for the first time, live reaction to a debate on a large scale.

A new report titled "A Crisis of Competence: The Corrupting Effect of Political Activism in the University of California," Association of Scholars (NAS) supports our argument that the government should get out of the liberal arts education business and focus strictly on research, math and sciences : of students joining the OWS protester, 99% are liberal arts majors

he participants in the poll are students invited to participate by a network of hundreds of political science professors around the country., according to  Boydstun.  In the latest poll, more than half of the students said they were Democrats, and 31 percent said they were Republicans. Similarly, 55 percent said they plan to vote for President Obama, and 30 percent said they plan to vote for Republican challenger Mitt Romney.  Now, throw away your smartphone, computer and or calculator and see if you can forecast whom the app will declare the winner?

In the poll, Vice President Biden received mostly “agree” clicks, while Ryan, the Republican challenger, received an even number of clicks for agree and disagree.

For Ryan, students largely disagreed with his abortion policy, but clicked mostly “agree” with his closing argument. For Biden, students disagreed with his discussion of Iran, and agreed most when he brought up Romney’s “47 percent” comment. Obviously these students are not aware of the President’s 69% response when he was asked by a CBS reporter as to why 69% if Americans opposed raising the debt ceiling:  “because 69% of Americans are either apathetic or stupid”

Now, while some think that the intelligence of crowds is an oxymoron, we happen to think that crowdsourcing when used properly, can be an extremely powerful data-mining tool.  Likewise for this app.  However, the app as described in the UC Davis’ News and Information web page, looks more like something the far left media polls might use to promote a far left agenda.

As for judging debates,  in high school and college, forensic  teams study and practice different forms of communication and discussion, including persuasion, informative speaking, rhetorical criticism and academic speaking. Debate teams are graded  using specific   criteria, such as  how clear they communicate and the strength of their arguments, not on the strength of their manipulative tactics.
