Rancho Santa Margarita, CA—BC Space Gallery presents Autumnal
Recollections with Our Friend Paul on September 22nd
through Nov 10, BC Space Gallery 235 Forest Avenue, Laguna Beach. Paul Darrow, at 92, is one of the elder statesmen of California
art. He is still in the studio, still making work, and still exploring the
mysteries of art and life.

Paul Darrow is a
longtime Laguna Beach resident; professor emeritus of Scripps College,
cartoonist, sailor, musician, painter, assemblage artist, photographer, and
great wit are some of what he is known for.
As a teacher, he has inspired many, and his students still visit, often
bearing gifts. His children and
grandchildren are artists as well, including
Chris (best known as a musician), Eric, a potter, and Elizabeth Darrow
Jones. He is the proud head of this
eclectic clan that all seem to have inherited the Darrow gifts.
As a cartoonist for the Claremont Courier he has contributed
a couple of cartoons a week for over 50 years.
As a fine artist he has had numerous one person shows including a show
in Memorial park in Claremont this spring. He was included recently in shows at
the Pasadena Art Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art during the
Getty-sponsored Pacific Standard Time exhibits.
Paul’s fine artwork is abstract. Based in experimentation
and Buddhism, he seeks to discover the profound in the detritus, the clarity in
the deliberately obscure, and the complex truth in simplicity. Using a variety
of materials and techniques, Paul juxtaposes previously unrelated objects to
create new meanings, surprises us with changes of scale, and just plain makes
art in the spirit of play, much as he has for over 70 years.
In mounting this exhibition, BC Space Gallery shares Paul’s
work and spirit on the equinox and the shortening of days that follows as it pays homage to the great talent and
superb person that is Paul Darrow and invites you to pay him a visit as the
summer changes to fall.
An artist reception is scheduled for September 22nd, 4:00-8:00 p.m. followed by
an artists conversation and reception with Paul on closing day, November 10
from 3:00-5:00pm. Gallery hours are: Tuesday-Saturday 2-5pm
Please note that Gallery hours are irregular and event driven, but appointments for viewing may easily be arranged by contacting the gallery at (949) 697-5237 or bcspace@mol.net
