Exploring Fibonacci Numbers through Music, Dance, Math, and the Visual Arts at Saddleback College

Posted By CotoBlogzz

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA – On Wednesday and Thursday February 10th and  11th at 7:30 p.m. the Departments of Dance and Music will present Sequences and Spirals:  Exploring Fibonacci Numbers through Music, Dance, Math and the Visual Arts in the McKinney Theatre on the Saddleback College campus.

The evening will include premieres of new music and dance from Professors Norman Weston and Deidre Cavazzi, as well as several fascinating mini-lectures from the Math, Architecture, and Horticulture departments, and a pre-show gallery exhibit in the Fine Arts quad featuring artwork from multiple visual arts classes on campus.

Every aspect of the performance is inspired by Fibonacci numbers and the intriguing ratios, spirals, and sequences that resonate through art and nature.  If you’ve ever seen a curling fern frond, a nautilus’ shell, an X-ray of a human hand or the face of the Mona Lisa, you have seen the impact of Fibonacci!  This event is appropriate for all ages, and celebrates collaboration between many students and professors across the Saddleback College campus, as well as the relationship between the arts and sciences.

Professor Deanna Valdez from the Math department, Professor Blake Stephens from the Architecture department, and Professors Robert Farnsworth and Ken Lee from Horticulture will present the mini-lectures, discussing how Fibonacci sequences relate to their disciplines, with lots of fascinating examples.  The evening will include two live music and two live dance performances, featuring students and faculty from the Dance and Music departments.  The gallery display in the Fine Arts courtyard before the performances will feature artwork from the students of Erin O'Shea and Veronica Obermeyer, and Ryan Even's Advanced Photography class will have images on display.
