Coto de Caza Fires in Coto - Are you Prepared?
Coto de Caza Fires in Coto - Are you Prepared?
OCTOBER 21, 2007
As we smell smoke in the air, are you prepared to evacuate if ever ordered to do so?, asks former member of the CZ Master Association board of directors Joseph Morabito.
More Morabito goes on saying "the last time we had fire in Coto right at the end of our street, I was in Orlando on a business trip when my wife called telling me she was ordered to leave our home. She asked what she should take. I told her to grab the files in our file cabinet and leave quick. She took some but not all". Mr. Morabito's message to Coto de Caza residents is to be prepared, given the limited Fire Authority resources, and sever strain usually associated with the Santa Ana Winds:
we will have another serious fire in Coto. It is inevitable. When the Laguna fire struck and we had fire as well in Coto, the Fire Authority was so over stretched that they were prepared to sacrifice the homes on the eastern side of our Valley to stop the fire at the golf course. Had that occurred hundreds of Coto homes would have been lost. Fire equipment from Orange County is now being used to fight the Malibu fire as I write this e-mail. When ever we have Santa Ana winds, we seem to have fires all over. It is going to happen again in Coto. Now is the time to prepare"
We vehemently agree with Mr. Morabito recommendations. The 2000 Fires were too close for comfort – the picture below shows a fire just behind the Woods.
In 2000, it was argued Coto homes were not destroyed because the trails had been cleared by the CZ Master Association board of directors. Although we were never able to confirm this, it does make sense for the CZ Master Association board of directors or any number of the highly paid consultants to take a look at the stated of the fire line trails.
