Coto & Ladera - 3Q2007 Crime and Vandalism report - A Tale of two cities

October 18, 2007

The latest Orange County Sheriff's crime and vandalism data shows a marked contrast between the communities of Coto de Caza and Ladera Ranch:

While the crime and vandalism figures in Coto de Caza display an upward trend, Ladera Ranch has been on a downward slope since the first quarter of 2006.

Interestingly, since the total population in Ladera Ranch is roughly doubled that of Coto de Caza, an argument can be made that for 2007, the per capita crime and vandalism rate for Coto de Caza almost doubled, compared to the one in Ladera Ranch

Another significant difference in the two communities (for 2007), is in the age group of those involved in reported infractions. Of three age groups: 20 years and under, 21-29 and 30 years and over, in Ladera Ranch, the mid-range age is responsible for 40% of the reported incidents, whereas in Coto de Caza, the age group of 20 and under is responsible for a whopping 42% of the incidents.

The number of reported theft/burglary incidents reported in 2007 for Ladera Ranch, are roughly the same as the ones in Coto de Caza. We are currently trying to see if it is possible to determine the percentage of Coto residents responsible for the crime and vandalism figures within the community, as opposed to those simply visiting Coto de Caza

NOTE: Because of logistics issues, this 3Q2007 is a partial report
