NSA Employee Faces Indictment for Leaking & Retention of NSA Info

According to the Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Maryland, a federal Grand Jury returned a 26-count indictment charging Mark Robert Unkenholz of Hanover Maryland  for willful transmission and retention of National Defense Information (NDI).  The indictment was returned on March 29, 2022 and unsealed today upon the arrest of the defendant.  Unkenholz is expected to have initial appearance at 3:00 p.m. today in U.S. District Court in Baltimore, before Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Beth P. Gesner.

The indictment was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek L. Barron; Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department’s Nationals Security Division; and Special Agent in Charge Thomas J. Sobocinski of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Baltimore Field Office.

FBI 2021 internet Crime Report

As an employee of the National Security Agency (NSA), Unkenholz held a TOP SECRET/SCI clearance and had lawful access to classified information relating to the national defense that was closely held by the government (“National Defense Information” or “NDI”).  National security information is classified as “TOP SECRET,” “SECRET,” or “CONFIDENTIAL.”  Only individuals with the appropriate security clearance could have authorized access to such classified national security information.  All classified information can only be stored in an approved facility and container.

Unkenholz represents a classic Insider Threat:  Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency(CISA)  defines Insider Threats as "Insider threat is the potential for an insider to use their authorized access or understanding of an organization to harm that organization. This harm can include malicious, complacent, or unintentional acts that negatively affect the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of the organization, its data, personnel, or facilities. External stakeholders and customers of DHS may find this generic definition better suited and adaptable for their organization’s use."  Depending on the experts, 70-90% of organizations have been victim of an Inside Threat.  Why the 2021 FBI Internet Crime Report even fails to mention the threat.

A cursory look at the Unkenholz surname shows it is very  rare surname.  It is estimated that the surname has been found in two countries:  The United States and Germany

According to the  indictment, on thirteen occasions between February 14, 2018 and June 1, 2020, Unkenholz, lawfully having possession of, access to, and control over NDI, which he had reason to believe could be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of any foreign nation, willfully transmitted that information to another person who was not entitled to receive it.  The indictment alleges that the information Unkenholz transmitted was classified at the SECRET and TOP SECRET/SCI levels and that Unkenholz transmitted the classified information using his personal email address to the other person’s private company email addresses.  The person receiving the information held a TOP SECRET/SCI clearance from April 2016 until approximately June 2019, while employed at a company referred to in the indictment as “Company 1.”  From July 2019 until approximately January 2021, the person worked for a company referred to in the indictment as “Company 2” and was not authorized to access or receive classified information

The indictment alleges that Unkenholz’s personal email address, and the company email addresses of the person receiving the information were not authorized storage locations for classified NDI.  Unkenholz allegedly retained the classified NDI within his personal email address.

FBI 2021 Internet Crime Report Void of Actionable Info, Ignore Occam's Razor

The  Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI)  2021 Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) Internet Crime Report shows a loss of $6.9 billion in Internet-enabled crimes, the highest in the last five years. The top three cyber crimes reported by victims in 2021 were phishing scams, non-payment/non-delivery scams, and personal data breach.

Victims lost the most money to business email compromise scams, investment fraud, and romance and confidence schemes, with Business Email as the single biggest lost at around $2 billion, followed by Investment Scams at $1,5 billion, Romance Scams at close to $1 billion, Personal  Data Breaches at one-half billion.

In addition to statistics, the IC3’s 2021 Internet Crime Report  contains information about the most prevalent internet scams affecting the public and offers guidance for prevention and protection.  Just yesterday, the FBI  reportedly warned the U.S. energy sector about network scanning activity stemming from multiple Russia-based IP addresses. The activity is believed to be associated with cyber hackers ‘who previously conducted destructive cyber activity against foreign critical infrastructure.’   According to  the CBS News  “The FBI has identified 140 overlapping IP addresses linked to ‘abnormal scanning’ activity of at least five U.S. energy companies, as well as at least 18 other U.S. companies spanning the defense industrial base, financial services, and information technology,” However, according to the FBI assessment, the focus appears to be on entities within the energy sector. “US Energy Sector entities are advised to examine current network traffic for these IP addresses and conduct follow-on investigations if observed,”

Simultaneously, John Sherman, Department of Defense Chief Information Officer (DoD CIO) has been using the White House's FACT SHEET: Act Now to Protect Against Potential Cyberattacks to warn about potential cyberattacks, which according to the FBI Internet Crime Report predominately affects seniors 6 years and older.

Both recommendations from the White House and the FBI read very much like the UK's National Cyber Security Centre's 10 Steps to Cyber Security Both fail to provide actionable information regarding the number one complaint Business Email and neglect to even mention Occam's Razor:  Ponnurangam Kumaraguru; Steve Sheng; Alessandro Acquisti; Lorrie Faith Cranor; Jason Hong in their paper Lessons from a real world evaluation of anti-phishing training, Published in 2008 eCrime Researchers Summit state that "Real world evaluations of anti-phishing training involve classroom and office training as well as training delivered via an online game. Researchers have evaluated the effectiveness of security notices and embedded training in laboratory studies. The idea of sending fake phishing emails to test users’ vulnerability has been explored by several groups. Jagatic et al. conducted a study in which they sent phishing emails to Indiana University students that pretended to come from one of their friends (this information was obtained through social networking websites.  Ferguson did a two-part study among West Point cadets. In the first phase, cadets were tested for their ability to detect phishing attacks. In the second phase, cadets were given classroom training and lectures about phishing and then tested. Ferguson showed an improvement in the cadets’ ability to identify phishing emails after the training.  Besides the FBI and White House suggestions to the Information Technology departments to "just do your job," I would have expected the FBI and or White House to provide anti-phising applications and training material.  I would add that manaers must not only provide training but also hold employees accountable using and appropriate incentive program usually found in accident prevention programs.

Perhaps the most important omission by the White House and FBI -   bordering on malpractice is both ignored the Inside Threat. Now consider that depending on pundits, 70-90% of organizations have experienced some sort of insider attack- organizations do not like to report such attacks for obvious reasons. A hackivist is a person who gains unauthorized access to computer files or networks in order to further social or political ends. However, when the computer access is not only allowed, but encouraged, it provides motive, means and opportunity and this is no longer a hackivist, but a partyvist, Where Means is the expertise government employees acquire through their day-to-day job, through trial and error or education.  Motive is associated with their party's ideology and  Opportunity.  In the digital connection for work and play is like having the criminal element sitting right next to you in your lounge room. It is ever-present.

The largest employer in the USA is the government with bloated bureaucracies and anachronistic labor practices which include public unions - these usually yield more power than elected officials who are supposed to manage represented government employees- read it takes an act of Congress to get rid of the undesirable employees, such as  Dr #Faucci, for example. Partyvists, like the IRS's Lois Lerner,  have motive, means and opportunity to commit any crime, including voter fraud.  Yet The FBI and DOJ consistently ignore the Insider Threat and fail to provide any actionable information.

Let's face it, there is a war out there and partyvists are galvanized: Applications that may exploit vulnerabilities include Tik Tok, Huawei & Kerberos.  The FBI and DOJ do not show much interest in these apps and completely ignore partyvists.

Four Russian Agents Charged With Hacking & Targeting Global Critical Infrastructure

Four Russian agents charged in two separate hacking campaigns targeting global critical infrastructure.  According to FBI press release, the Department of Justice "unsealed two indictments today charging four defendants, all Russian nationals who worked for the Russian government, with attempting, supporting, and conducting cyber intrusions that together, in two separate conspiracies, targeted the global energy sector between 2012 and 2018. In total, these hacking campaigns targeted thousands of computers, at hundreds of companies and organizations, in approximately 135 countries.

Critical infrastructure  is a term used by government entities to describe assets that are essential for the functioning of a society and economy.  While such assets are different for each country, most  commonly associated with the term are facilities for:

In the  USA, the  Patriot Act of 2001 defined critical infrastructure as those "systems and assets, whether physical or virtual, so vital to the United States that the incapacity or destruction of such systems and assets would have a debilitating impact on security, national economic security, national public health or safety, or any combination of those matters."  In 2014 the NIST Cybersecurity Framework was published, and quickly became a popular set of guidelines, despite the significant costs of full compliance.

A June 2021 indictment in the District of Columbia, United States v. Evgeny Viktorovich Gladkikh, concerns the alleged efforts of an employee of a Russian Ministry of Defense research institute and his co-conspirators to damage another country’s critical infrastructure, thereby causing two separate emergency shutdowns at the targeted facility. The conspiracy subsequently attempted to hack the computers of a U.S. company that managed similar critical infrastructure entities in the United States.

Similarly, an August 2021 indictment from the District of Kansas, United States v. Pavel Aleksandrovich Akulov, et al., details allegations about a two-phased campaign undertaken by three officers of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) and their co-conspirators to target and compromise the computers of hundreds of energy sector-related companies and entities worldwide. Access to such systems would have provided the Russian government the ability to, among other things, disrupt and damage such computer systems at a future date of its choosing.

Pope Francis to Consecrate Russia. NYT says it may be hazardous to Ukraine

According to the Vatican News' Amedeo Lomonaco,  on Friday, March 25, Pope Francis will consecrate Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary,  a decision welcomed by  Archbishop Paolo Pezzi, the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow, saying it is an invitation to conversion and to rediscover hope and peace. But what does that mean exactly, and why is this significant?  Pope St. John Paul II, who consecrated the entire Church and world to Mary three times during his pontificate, taught that by consecrating oneself to Mary, we accept her help in offering ourselves fully to Christ.  Colin Donovan, vice president for theology at EWTN,  says that consecration "is an entrustment and also an appeal to God. The entrustment here is the fact that we lay ourselves, our hearts, our prayers, our desires at the feet of Our Lady, and that serves God's purposes because it elevates Our Lady in the mind of the Church, and hopefully in the mind in the world. And it's an appeal to God for our particular needs."  But according to the New York Times' Benedict Carey, praying may be  hazardous to Ukraine

AndreasPraefcke   | Our Lady of Fatima

Previously, in an unprecedented gesture, Pope Francis visited the Russian embassy in Rome on Friday February 25, 2022 to express his concern over the war. According to the Associated Press, officials at the Vatican said they knew of no previous initiative by the pope to end a conflict in such a way. However,  Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin characterized the Pope's move as an impassive empty gesture.  Perhaps Rubin is not aware that the Vatican cannot impose an effective no fly zone, something Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has aske NATO and the USA for multiple times.  He has also asked for military aid.  Something the Vatican is unable to provide.

According to Wikipedia, the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary was "allegedly" ordered in a Marian apparition by Our Lady of Fátima in 13 July 1917- emphasis mine.  In her third apparition to the children of Fatima, in a vision to Lucia, Our Lady requested two things: the consecration of Russia, and the devotion of the Five First Saturdays of reparation. If these requests were heeded, she said, Russia would convert and there would be peace; if not, Russia would spread her errors throughout the world, another war would break out, and immense suffering would befall the Church and the world. The requests were not heeded, and the world endured the dreadful events of the 20th century: World War II, the Soviet oppression, the spread of communism and so on. Thus, Rubin and Carey, notwithstanding, the consecration of Russia  plays a critical role to peace today.  According to Wikipedia, The Vatican stated that Sister Lúcia declared to them in private correspondence on 8 November 1989 that the consecration offered by Pope John Paul II in Saint Peter's Square on 25 March 1984 had been properly accomplished and was “accepted in Heaven”.

So, what is it?  According to the Catholic Company,  "what is certain is that the consecration of Russia is vitally important, and that we should pray hard for the Holy Father leading up to consecration day. We should also be fulfilling Our Lady’s other, equally critical request: the devotion of the Five First Saturdays." Where the habit of the Five First Saturdays consists of the daily Rosary, receive Holy Communion, go to confession - according to Behavioral Economics Researcher, Dan Ariely, confessions works, in case Carey or Rubin asks, say five decades of the Rosary,  meditate for fifteen additional minutes on the Mysteries of the Rosary.  This devotion must be done for Russia to be converted.

The Solemnity of Saint Joseph

The Solemnity of St. Joseph is coming tomorrow. On the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Dec. 8, 2020, Pope Francis issued an apostolic letter, Patris corde (“With a Father’s Heart”), for the 150th anniversary of the declaration of St. Joseph as patron of the universal Church. To mark the occasion, Pope Francis proclaimed a year dedicated to Mary’s husband, Joseph, foster father to Jesus. The special “Year of St. Joseph” concluded on Dec. 8, 2021. Pope Francis explains that the aim of this special year is “to increase our love for this great saint, to encourage us to implore his intercession and to imitate his virtues and his zeal,” describing St. Joseph as a “beloved father, a tender and loving father, an obedient father, an accepting father; a father who is creatively courageous, a working father, a father in the shadows.”

File:Life-of-saint-joseph-1829.jpg ...
commons.wikimedia.org

In his Patris Corde, Pope Francis includes 30 biblical references to support his assertions that:

Joseph is a beloved father.   Saint Paul VI pointed out that Joseph concretely expressed his fatherhood “by making his life a sacrificial service to the mystery of the incarnation and its redemptive purpose. He employed his legal authority over the Holy Family to devote himself completely to them in his life and work. He turned his human vocation to domestic love into a superhuman oblation of himself, his heart and all his abilities, a love placed at the service of the Messiah who was growing to maturity in his home

Joseph as a tender and loving father. Joseph saw Jesus grow daily “in wisdom and in years and in divine and human favour” (Lk 2:52). As the Lord had done with Israel, so Joseph did with Jesus: he taught him to walk, taking him by the hand; he was for him like a father who raises an infant to his cheeks, bending down to him and feeding him (cf. Hos 11:3-4)."

Joseph as an obedient father. "As he had done with Mary, God revealed his saving plan to Joseph. He did so by using dreams, which in the Bible and among all ancient peoples, were considered a way for him to make his will known."

Joseph as an accepting father. " Joseph accepted Mary unconditionally. He trusted in the angel’s words.  “The nobility of Joseph’s heart is such that what he learned from the law he made dependent on charity. Today, in our world where psychological, verbal and physical violence towards women is so evident, Joseph appears as the figure of a respectful and sensitive man. Even though he does not understand the bigger picture, he makes a decision to protect Mary’s good name, her dignity and her life. In his hesitation about how best to act, God helped him by enlightening his judgment”.

Joseph as creatively courageous father. If the first stage of all true interior healing is to accept our personal history and embrace even the things in life that we did not choose, we must now add another important element: creative courage. This emerges especially in the way we deal with difficulties. In the face of difficulty, we can either give up and walk away, or somehow engage with it. At times, difficulties bring out resources we did not even think we had."

"A superficial reading of these stories can often give the impression that the world is at the mercy of the strong and mighty, but the “good news” of the Gospel consists in showing that, for all the arrogance and violence of worldly powers, God always finds a way to carry out his saving plan. So too, our lives may at times seem to be at the mercy of the powerful, but the Gospel shows us what counts. God always finds a way to save us, provided we show the same creative courage as the carpenter of Nazareth, who was able to turn a problem into a possibility by trusting always in divine providence."

Joseph as a working father. "An aspect of Saint Joseph that has been emphasized from the time of the first social Encyclical, Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum, is his relation to work. Saint Joseph was a carpenter who earned an honest living to provide for his family. From him, Jesus learned the value, the dignity and the joy of what it means to eat bread that is the fruit of one’s own labor."

Joseph as a father in the shadows.  T"he Polish writer Jan DobraczyÅ„ski, in his book The Shadow of the Father,[24] tells the story of Saint Joseph’s life in the form of a novel. He uses the evocative image of a shadow to define Joseph. In his relationship to Jesus, Joseph was the earthly shadow of the heavenly Father: he watched over him and protected him, never leaving him to go his own way. We can think of Moses’ words to Israel: “In the wilderness… you saw how the Lord your God carried you, just as one carries a child, all the way that you travelled” (Deut 1:31). In a similar way, Joseph acted as a father for his whole life."

Finally Pope Francis ends his letter with a prayer to Saint Joseph

Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To you God entrusted his only Son;
in you Mary placed her trust;
with you Christ became man.

Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage,
and defend us from every evil. Amen.

"Each of us can discover in Joseph – the man who goes unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden presence – an intercessor, a support and a guide in times of trouble. Saint Joseph reminds us that those who appear hidden or in the shadows can play an incomparable role in the history of salvation."

If you have any areas where your family is under attack, fears you have for loved ones or for our Church, we encourage you to call out to St. Joseph for his intercession - particularly on his feast day. As a helpful reminder to pray, The Catholic Company has we  a wonderful St. Joseph and the Holy Family prayer bracelet, and for fun, it has some great St. Joseph socks so you can show your love for St. Joseph at Mass, out with friends or at the office.

Overview: FBI statement on HBCUs at Risk

Today, Ryan T. Young, FBI's Executive Assistant Director, Intelligence Branch Statement Before the House Oversight and Reform Committee titled:  HBCUs at Risk: Examining Federal Support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities reviews the threats to members of faith-based communities across the United States, houses of worship, and schools noting that these threats have been rising in recent years, as evidenced by the hostage-taking at Congregation Beth Israel, a synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, and the bomb threats against HBCUs that continue today.

The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, defines an HBCU as: “…any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary [of Education] to be a reliable authority as to the quality of training offered or is, according to such an agency or association, making reasonable progress toward accreditation.”   More than two months after funding expired, Congress approved  Dec. 10 the FUTURE Act, and President Trump signed it into law,  a bill that will restore and make permanent a $255 million per year funding stream for HBCUs  and other minority serving institutions (MSIs). The compromise bill hammered out in the Senate  streamlined the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by making it easier for the Department of Education to gather information directly from the IRS, cutting at least 22 questions from the form. The FAFSA simplifications are estimated to save $2.8 billion over a decade,

ReimaginED Infographics

Young described FBI efforts to engage with the served communities, including the creation of a a domestic terrorism/hate crimes fusion cell, "which brings together both our domestic terrorism expertise and our hate crimes expertise and ensures that the multidisciplinary nature of the problem is effectively addressed."  Additionally, the FBI created a Multi-Cultural Engagement Council, composed of ethnic, religious, and minority leaders to better understand these cultures and devise solutions to the threats facing these communities.

FBI’s outreach program includes works with minority groups, academic institutions, and religious, civic, and non-profit organizations toward crime prevention and local, national, and international safety campaigns and educational video screenings. The outreach efforts are ways the FBI  helps  individuals and families stay safe from cyber predators; help businesses protect against hackers and economic espionage; protect houses of worship, academic institutions, and workplaces against violent rampages; and help all citizens be alert to potential acts of terror and violent extremism, according to Young

In the statement, Young outlines the FBI outreach efforts with the private sector and academia: The Office of the Private Sector’s essential function is to strengthen the FBI’s relationships with private industry and academia to protect the nation’s economy and national security. OPS outreach comprises intelligence product information sharing, engagement through field office private-sector coordinators, issue-based collaboration through strategic engagement advisors, private-sector cooperation through the Domestic Security Alliance Council (DSAC) and InfraGard, and strong relationships through the academic program.

"This past month, in response to the numerous bomb threats targeting HBCUs, OPS partnered with OPE and DHS to host a partner call for HBCUs across the country. Approximately 1,400 participants were on the call, during which we provided a situational update, points of contact to report additional threats, and resources available to the academic institutions." - which appear more reactive than proactive as Young previously mentioned

The FBI's  Office of Partner Engagement coordinates enterprise-level strategies for the FBI’s engagement with federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial law enforcement agencies. Through partner calls, situational reports, intelligence products, and timely electronic communications, OPE leans forward to share information to keep partners apprised of threats and mitigation efforts.

Although outreach with houses of worship and faith-based groups falls under the purview of the Office of Public Affairs, OPE maintains the relationship with those in the faith-based community who are responsible for keeping the community safe and secure. Most notably, OPE works with the Secure Community Network (SCN), which is the official homeland security and safety initiative of the organized Jewish community of North America and other groups, such as groups related to the Catholic Church and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as well as the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). This role includes maintaining relationships with various national-level leaders in the faith-based community by establishing regular telephone calls between these groups and the FBI’s operational divisions. Additionally, OPE maintains regular contact with executives of these groups, responding to their concerns and keeping them informed of events of interest by leveraging FBI subject-matter experts from operational divisions to speak during these member calls.

The FBI's Office of Public Affairs helps inform, alert, and mobilize members of the public to assist in investigations and empower them to protect themselves from ongoing threats and crimes. And by doing so, OPA strives to enhance public trust and confidence by sharing information about the FBI’s responsibilities, operations, and accomplishments.

Young concludes that "houses of worship and HBCUs, along with other public spaces where people gather, require robust protection efforts, which start with effective partnerships." - Young's statement to the House repeats HBCU  several times, but does not explain why he singles these institutions out.  He also fails to mention that 37 State Constitutions include anti-Catholic language.  While Young's statement is consistent with previous FBI statements "the bureau intends to be proactive, not reactive yet what is mostly described in Young's statement seems reactionary."

Five Indicted on Charges Related to CCP Spying on Chinese Nationals in US and Abroad

Complaints were unsealed today in federal court charging five defendants with various crimes related to efforts by the secret police of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to stalk, harass and spy on Chinese nationals residing in Queens, New York, and elsewhere in the United States.

Public Domain:   Byron E. Schumaker, ca. 1935-, Photographer (NARA record: 8451340U.S. National Archives and Records Administration

This comes on the heels of the FBI and CISA issuing a warning titled: Mitigating Threats Posed by Russian State-Sponsored Cyber Actors’ Exploitation of Default Multifactor Authentication Protocol and “PrintNightmare” Vulnerability encouraging all organizations to take enable, enforce, and properly configure MFA as well as prioritize patching of known exploited vulnerabilities.

The defendants participated in transnational repression schemes to silence critics of  of China residing in the United States and abroad, including by attempting to disrupt the campaign of a U.S. Military Veteran and Candidate for U.S. Congress in Brooklyn who expressed views critical of the PRC and by scheming to destroy a PRC dissident’s artwork criticizing the PRC government

Fan “Frank” Liu and Matthew Ziburis were arrested yesterday in the Eastern District of New York, while Shujun Wang was arrested this morning in the Eastern District of New York. Their initial appearances are scheduled this afternoon in Brooklyn before U.S. Magistrate Judge James R. Cho. The other two defendants remain at large.

According to court documents, all the defendants allegedly perpetrated transnational repression schemes to target U.S. residents whose political views and actions are disfavored by the PRC government, such as advocating for democracy in the PRC. In one of these schemes, the co-conspirators sought to interfere with federal elections by allegedly orchestrating a campaign to undermine the U.S. congressional candidacy of a U.S. military veteran who was a leader of the 1989 pro-democracy demonstrations in Beijing, PRC. In another of these schemes, three defendants planned to destroy the artwork of a PRC national residing in Los Angeles that was critical of the PRC government, and planted surveillance equipment in the artist’s workplace and car to spy on him from the PRC.

Qiming Lin, 59, of the PRC, is charged with conspiracy to commit interstate harassment.  As alleged, Lin works on behalf of the PRC’s Ministry of State Security (MSS). The MSS is a civilian intelligence and secret police agency responsible for counterintelligence and political security.

Beginning in September 2021, Lin hired a private investigator (the PI) in New York to disrupt the campaign of a Brooklyn resident currently running for U.S. Congress, including by physically attacking the victim. The victim was a student leader of the pro-democracy demonstrations in Tiananmen Square in 1989, who later escaped to the United States, served in the U.S. military, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen. In September 2021, the victim, announced his intention to run for a U.S. congressional seat on Long Island in the November 2022 general election.

In hiring the PI, Lin explained that if the victim was selected during the June 2022 primary election, then he might be “elected to be a legislator. Right now we don’t want him to be elected. Whatever price is fine. As long as you can do it.”  He also promised that “we will have a lot more-more of this work in the future…Including right now a New York State legislator.” Lin explained to the PI that Lin was working with other unidentified individuals in the PRC to stop the victim from being elected to U.S. Congress.

As alleged, Lin first asked the PI to provide information about the victim, including the victim’s address and phone number, which the PI later provided. Lin also requested that the PI unearth derogatory information about the victim or, if no such information could be found, “manufacture something, like what happened to a famous concert pianist ” That request referred to an incident in Beijing in which the Pianist was reportedly detained after allegedly being found in the company of a prostitute. Lin later reiterated that, if the PI could not uncover a scandal, then “can they create some?” Lin also encouraged the PI to “go find a girl… Or see how he goes for prostitution, take some photos, something of that nature.” in December 2021, Lin proposed that the PI also consider physically attacking the Victim to prevent his candidacy. In a voice message to the PI, Lin stated:

"You can start thinking now, aside from violence, what other plans are there? Huh? But in the end, violence would be fine too. Huh? Beat him [chuckles], beat him until he cannot run for election. Heh, that’s the-the last resort. You-you think about it. Car accident, [he] will be completely wrecked [chuckles], right? Don’t know, eh, whatever ways from all different angles. Or, on the day of the election, he cannot make it there himself, right?"

Shujun Wang, 73, of Queens, New York, is charged with acting as an agent of the PRC government, criminal use of means of identification and making materially false statements in connection with his participation in a transnational repression scheme orchestrated by the MSS. As alleged, Wang is a former visiting scholar and author who helped start a pro-democracy organization in Queens that memorializes two former leaders of the Chinese Communist Party who promoted political and economic reforms within the PRC and were eventually forced from power. Since at least 2015, however, Wang has secretly operated at the direction and control of several MSS officers.

At the direction of the MSS, Wang used his position and status within Chinese diaspora community in New York City to collect information about prominent activists, dissidents, and human rights leaders to report that information to the PRC government. While ostensibly lending a sympathetic ear, Wang reported on statements activists made in confidence to him, including on their views on democracy in the PRC, as well as planned speeches, writings, and demonstrations against the Chinese Communist Party. The victims of Wang’s efforts included individuals and groups located in New York City and elsewhere that the PRC considers subversive, such as Hong Kong pro-democracy activists, advocates for Taiwanese independence, and Uyghur and Tibetan activists, both in the United States and abroad. Wang sent email diaries to the MSS that contained details of his conversations with prominent dissidents, the activities of pro-democracy activists, as well as relevant phone numbers and other contact information for the targets of the PRC government.

The complaint also alleges that, during an interview in Queens on Aug. 2, 2017, Wang lied to federal law enforcement, falsely denying that he had contacts with PRC officials or the MSS when in fact he had been secretly reporting on U.S. residents to the MSS. Wang later admitted much of his criminal conduct to an undercover member of law enforcement and during a subsequent interview with agents.

Wang was arrested this morning in the Eastern District of New York and is scheduled to make his initial appearance this afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge James R. Cho.

Fan “Frank” Liu, 62, of Long Island, New York, and Matthew Ziburis, 49, of Oyster Bay New York, are charged with conspiring to act as agents of the PRC government. Liu, Ziburis and co-defendant Quiang “Jason” Sun, 40, of the PRC, are charged with conspiring to commit interstate harassment and criminal use of a means of identification. Liu and Sun are charged with conspiring to bribe a federal official in connection with their scheme to obtain the tax returns of a pro-democracy activist residing in the United States. According to the complaint, Liu is president of a purported media company based in New York City, while Ziburis is a former correctional officer for the State of Florida and a bodyguard. Sun is a PRC-based employee of an international technology company.

According to the complaint, Liu and Ziburis have been operating under Sun’s direction and control to discredit pro-democracy PRC dissidents residing in the United States, including in New York City, California and Indiana,   by spying on them and disseminating negative information about them.

As part of their efforts, the defendants electronically allegedly spied on the pro-democracy activists. The defendants also planned to interview the dissidents in mock media sessions, using the cover of Liu’s purported media organizations. Sun provided outlines for these fake interviews and designed questions to elicit answers that were intended to humiliate or discredit the dissidents. The defendants intended that audio or video clips of these statements could be used in PRC propaganda materials targeting the dissidents.

Liu and Ziburis were arrested yesterday in the Eastern District of New York and are scheduled to make their initial appearances this afternoon in Brooklyn before U.S. Magistrate Judge James R. Cho. Sun remains at large.

FBI and CISA Warns about Russian State-Sponsored Cyber Actors’ Exploitation of Vulnerability

Today, the FBI issued a warning titled. Mitigating Threats Posed by Russian State-Sponsored Cyber Actors’ Exploitation of Default Multifactor Authentication Protocol and “PrintNightmare” Vulnerability encouraging all organizations to take enable, enforce, and properly configure MFA as well as prioritize patching of known exploited vulnerabilities.  In other words, make sure your security department is doing its job.  Security 101 students know they should remove unnecessary open ports, keep ip with patches, review configurations and eliminate poor or outdated configurations, remove default pass words, and review the insider threat.  Even the DHS warns about the insider threat - some 60-90% of organizations have experienced a security breach due to the inside threat.  The variance is mostly due to reporting:  Some organizations refuse to report breaches for obvious reasons

The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)  issue

d a joint cybersecurity advisory today with technical details, mitigations, and resources regarding previously demonstrated ability of Russian state-sponsored cyber actors to gain network access through exploitation of default multifactor authentication (MFA) protocols and a known vulnerability in Windows Print Spooler, “PrintNightmare.”  The advisory, titled “Russian State-Sponsored Cyber Actors Gain Network Access by Exploiting Default Multifactor Authentication Protocols and ‘PrintNightmare’ Vulnerability,” provides observed tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs); indicators of compromise (IOCs); and mitigation recommendations. The FBI and CISA urge all organizations to take immediate action to protect against this malicious activity and apply recommended mitigations such as:

As early as May 2021, the Russian state-sponsored cyber actors took advantage of a misconfigured account set to default MFA protocols at a non-governmental organization, allowing them to enroll a new device for MFA and access the victim’s network. The actors then exploited a critical vulnerability “PrintNightmare” (CVE-2021-34527) to run arbitrary code with system privileges, and then were able to access cloud and email accounts for document exfiltration.

Specifically the advisory encourages users to Enforce MFA for all users, without exception, and ensure it is properly configured to protect against “fail open” and re-enrollment scenarios

Implement time-out and lock-out features

Disable inactive accounts uniformly in active directory, MFA, etc.

Update software, prioritizing known exploited vulnerabilities

Monitor network logs continuously for suspicious activity

Implement security alerting policies

CISA has updated the Shields Up webpage to include new services and resources, recommendations for corporate leaders and chief executive officers, and actions to protect critical assets. Additionally, CISA has created a new Shields Up Technical Guidance webpage that details other malicious cyber activity affecting Ukraine. The webpage includes technical resources from partners to assist organizations against these threats.

To report a cyber incident, organizations should contact CISA at report@cisa.gov or call CISA’s 24/7 CISA Central Operations Center at (888) 282-0870 and/or to the FBI via your local FBI field office or the FBI’s 24/7 CyWatch at (855) 292-3937 or CyWatch@fbi.gov.

Yancey speculates St Teresa took pleasure in witnessing children under her care starve

In response to my piece celebrating the Unsung American Heroines during the recent International Women's Day, Norinda Rosario Yancey has this to say about Saint Mother Teresa "I would recommend reading a little more about Mother Teresa.

EWTN Meme:

She was quite troubled emotionally and spiritually. Though morbid, there is speculation based on her writings that she was oddly fascinated and may have even taken some pleasure in witnessing the starvation and illness of those she is said to have cared for. It's fascinating really, but I no longer regard her as a hero."   Yancey describes herself as an educator and a Metro Parks Tacoma, Washington employee and a JEDAI, illustrating the sorry state of affairs not only in education, but also the tax-payer funded parasitic bureaucracies

Norinda Rosario Yancey is not alone: Wikipedia has over 50 sources criticizing the saint and the New York Times writes that praying is not only a waste of time, but may be hazardous to your health. But cancel culture is not new.  It has been used for generations to impose a different world view.  People often rewrite history for a number of reasons:  money, power, revenge, jealousy and so on.  Take for instance the English invention of the Black Legend used to vilify Spain, the Catholic Church and Mixed Race people. Or the lies that Saint Junipero Serra maltreated native Americans..  That was quite the opposite. Or  Bill Clinton, Obama and  Anti Catholic historians blaming the Catholic Church and  the Crusades for Islamic Terrorism

The Church has 2000 years dealing with the Yances, main stream media, the New York Times and others who want to see its destruction.  More lies, including the above have been aimed at destroying the Roman Catholic Church than any other institution in the world. So much that even most Catholics believe the lies they were taught in high school or have seen on T.V. and social media: Consider all the misrepresentations that Pope Francis has been subjected to, even when he clearly stated in his Laudato Si: "Since everything is interrelated, concern for the protection of nature, is incompatible with the justification of abortion" - Pope Francis in his book Forty Anti-Catholic Lies: A Myth-Busting Apologist Sets the Record Straight, Gerard Verschuuren refutes popular myths about Catholicism, while in "Seven Lies about Catholic History," Dr. Diane Moczar debunks revisionist history exposing the lies we have heard over and over again.

The Church, like St. Thomas Aquinas knows that "to one who has faith, no explanation is necessary.  to one without faith, no explanation is possible.  The Church also knows that miracles such as those attributed to Saint Teresa can often be manufactured. She knows that fallen humans sometimes make up stories for the purposes of fame or attention. She also knows that demons have certain powers that can make certain things appear miraculous.  Why the Church has developed a protocol to validate miraculous occurrences. In all these investigations, the Church is careful, thorough, and detached in her approach. She employs doctors, scientists, and competent authorities in order to rule out natural explanations or to understand the phenomenon better. Only when she has completed this stringent process does she validate the miracle.

Poor JEDAI Industry.  So far from God, so close to the most powerful office in the world

Progressive policies, Tribal Leaders & corrupt politicians have failed Native Americas & Alaska Natives.

To say that the Reservation System allowed indigenous people to govern themselves and to maintain some of their cultural and social traditions. Originally created to keep Native Americans off of lands that newly arrived European Americans wished to settle has been a total failure is an understatement. The United Nations defines human rights as  "

Native American Totem as seen by 3rd grader

rights as freedom of movement; equality before the law; the right to a fair trial and presumption of innocence; freedom of thought, conscience and religion; freedom of opinion and expression; peaceful assembly; freedom of association; participation in public affairs and elections; and protection of minority rights. It prohibits arbitrary deprivation of life; torture, cruel or degrading treatment or punishment; slavery and forced labor; arbitrary arrest or detention; arbitrary interference with privacy; war propaganda; discrimination; and advocacy of racial or religious hatred."

Yet, Native Americans and Alaska Natives have and continue to suffer human  rights abuses due to  progressive policies which can be aptly characterized as War on Minorities: WON, corrupt politicians and incompetent tribal leadership.  Prior to Dr, Faucci, U.S. government doctors thought it was fine to experiment on disabled people, prison inmates and minorities, such experiments as  giving hepatitis to mental patients, squirting a pandemic flu virus up the noses of prisoners in Maryland,  injecting cancer cells into chronically ill people at a New York hospital, sterilizing Native American women whiteout their consent and notably the Tuskegee trials where for r 40 years, the US Public Health Service (PHS) conducted an experiment on African Americans men who suffered from syphilis, lured them under the guise of free medical care and meals but withheld treatment

When was the last time you counted the number of local, state & federal bureaucracies designed to help Native Americans? By my count, these are in the thousands. And how successful are they at managing taxpayer money in the name of helping  Native Americans? Look at the data:  On June 13, 2014, President Obama visited  the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North Dakota to highlight the challenges Native Americans face. In an op-ed in Indian Country Today, Obama called the poverty and high school dropout rates among Native Americans a moral call to action. Not to mention alcohol and drug abuse. While reservations vary drastically in size, population, political economy, culture and traditions,  all reservations face similar challenges: Native Americans account for only a small part of the U.S. population but they experience much higher rates of substance abuse compared to other racial and ethnic groups.  Then there's the general despair due to poverty and  lack of opportunity for the young ones.  The data clearly shows that the Native American and Alaska Native bureaucracies  have been a complete failure - not unlike most bureaucracies.

According to the New York Times, there may be a tribal exception: The financial success of the 480 members of the Shakopee Tribe, in Minnesota, with a reported 99.2 percent unemployment, due to its casino and resort operation. But casino and resort operations alone are not sustainable.

When presidential candidate Mitt Romney endorsed a proposal to eliminate major federal assistance programs for low-income Americans and turn them over to the states, The Center On Budget and Policy Priorities immediately  took Romney to task. writing"  the rationale he offered for doing so in this past Sunday’s “Meet the Press” debate — that the federal bureaucracy eats up most of the money Congress provides for these programs, and little actually reaches people in need — is simply false.  At least nine-tenths of federal spending for each of these programs (and in most cases, a higher percentage) reaches low-income Americans' - The fact of the matter is that anyone who owns the chart of accounts can make a P & L Statement read like a P or a L.  Putting that aside for a while, all government programs designed to help low income Americans by come with tons of red tape, which only the well-connected can navigate, are prone to political manipulations or as Lois G. Lerner, the IRS official who oversaw the IRS abuses targeting conservative groups, said the actions were  absolutely inappropriate by front-line people were not driven by partisan motives.. Ken Poirot observed that  "Wherever there is power, greed, and money, there is corruption," while  Timothy 1:10 says "For the love of money is the root of all evils, and some people in their desire for it have strayed from the faith and have pierced themselves with many pains."

Forbes' Simon Constable says that "there's too much misinformation about the U.S. government's food stamp scheme. So after some investigation, here are some facts about the benefit, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)" and goes on to detail fraud as he sees it, where USDA defines USDA fraud  as" the exchange of benefits for cash or other ineligible items (trafficking) or purposefully misrepresenting information on your SNAP application in order to receive benefits that you are not entitled to or more benefits than you are entitled to receive."

Many progressive solutions have been offered,  such as the one by the Center for American Progress,  In a classic misapplication of the theory of allocation, CAP writes that "American Indian and Alaska Native women in the United States make just 60 cents for every dollar earned by their white male counterparts, and this wage gap forces too many of them and their families into poverty." its akin to saying that if you mix apples and pineapples you could get crabapples:  A 5%, 25%, 50% or 100% pay raise has not changed anyone's lifestyle. To end alcoholism in reservations, USA Today's Naomi Schaefer Riley suggests a much more proactive tribal leadership

To really address the poverty, drug and alcohol abuse in the Native American and Alaska Natives, a new paradigm is required.  Building casinos as a way out is like serving alcohol in an Alcoholic, Anonymous meeting. You could throw away all the bureaucracies designed to help the Indigenous population and they would not fare any worse.  The only ones who would be hurt would be tribal leaders, bureaucrats and corrupt politicians - here are some thoughts

1.  Abolish all bureaucracies designed to help Indigenous people and use the funds to set up high speed networks  and free computing devices for each family in the tribe, as in home office, call-center ready

2. Incentive businesses to train and hire Indigenous people. COVID has shown us that working remotely is possible - businesses do not need buildings in or near the reservations

3.  Set up trade schools online, near or in the reservations

4.  Stop all new construction of casinos

Meta & Others agree to work-from-anywhere, Why not the Reservation?

5.  Avoid the one million dollar executive to take care of the homeless. Let Catholic faith based
organizations help out with education, alcohol and drugs abuse. There are plenty of such groups already doing that job like: Sister Chato, a Navajo woman and member of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, who works in the Diocese of Gallup serving the largest Native American reservation in the United States is Navajo Nation,  covering  northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico, as well as parts of Utah.  There is  Sister Margaret Hillary, OP who has served the community on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana and The Sisters on the Frontlines. Sisters on the Frontline are prophetic witnesses and voices of hope. They are close to those who are in need and they are trusted by people of all walks of life

More politicians looking for photo opportunities is no longer acceptable.  More bureaucracies is not acceptable.  A paradigm change is required to end the misery and human rights abuses in the Res.

Hunter Biden Leads Venezuela Energy Delegation

According to the Hill, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) slammed the Biden Administration over oil talks between Biden administration officials and the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. While The Palestinian Wasp reports the US delegation is led by Hunter Biden. According to sources close to Mr Biden,  "Hunter is the perfect person due to his extensive experience in the energy sector, including advising Burisma Holdings Limited and he even wrote a book to prove it."  In the Book Beautiful Thing, Mr. Biden insists his relationship was not unethical, but he would not do it again.

Accompanying Mr, Hunter is transportation secretary, Mayor Pete.  A spokesperson for Mayor Pete said he was looking forward to meeting with the Venezuelan delegation because the country has the expertise required to manage empty shelves, directly applicable to the situation in America.

As reported by the Babylonian Bee

Reportedly, right after the Venezuela trip, Mr Biden is scheduled to travel to Myanmar,  as it is fast becoming the world's biggest producer of methamphetamine and synthetic drugs.  Biden's Spokesperson said the Delegation was fortunate to have his hands-on expertise in the supply chain.  Mr. Biden's goal i to strike a deal for a record buy. "Our goal is to meet the Average American Needs," he said. "The more readily available the drugs to average Americans, the happier they will be and  inflation and war will no longer be top of mind for them," he added.

According to the Palestinian Wasp, the last country in the itinerary is Zimbabwe.  Mayor Pete who recently returned from maternity leave, came across the Curious Kids website  where the question was asked: "What country has the most printed money?"  The corresponding answer was "At the moment, there is one country that can get richer by printing more money, and that's the United States (a country that is already very wealthy). This is because most of the valuable things that countries around the world buy and sell to one another, including gold and oil, are priced in US dollars."  So why Zimbabwe you may ask?   Zimbabwe banknotes ranging from 10 dollars to 100 billion dollars were printed within a one-year period. Mayor Pete thinks he has stumbled upon a solution to the high cost of energy:  Buy electric cars with the newly printed money!  By the way, the magnitude of the Zimbabwe currency scalars signifies the extent of the hyperinflation

International Women's Day: The Unsung American Heroines

Today, March 8 is International Women's Day which celebrates women's social, economic, cultural and political achievements and marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. This year's theme focuses on women in the context of climate change: "Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow; #BreakTheBias. Doing a quick Google Search one can immediately see that the majority of the women featured in articles and advertisements are women of color. But surprisingly, powerful women like Condoleezza Rice, currently the Denning Professor in Global Business and the Economy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business are nowhere to be seen.  Neither is Michelle Obama or Hilary Clinton. Worse, yet, the wife of Ukraine’s President Zelensky, who has made an emotional plea to international media to report the terrible truth of Russian forces killing children in their attack on Ukraine is not even mentioned

Collage of Google search: IWD 2022

I would expect that with such theme, for sure Sister Theresa Chato, a Navajo woman and member of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament who serves at Our Lady of Fatima, a church built in the traditional Navajo hogan style in the heart of the reservation in Chinle, Arizona, where parishioners gather to celebrate their Catholic faith grounded in the context of their Navajo culture and traditions, would be featured front and center, right?  Sister Chato is the director of religious education, ministers to families and elders in the community, upholds parish life, volunteers at the parish food bank and attends to her parishioners in their spiritual and personal needs. The Navajo Nation is the largest Native American reservation in the United States covering northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico, as well as parts of Utah. The boundaries of the Diocese of Gallup mirror this multi-state territory.

Catholic Extension writes that Sister Chato's leadership position within the parish aligns with the traditional matriarchal Navajo society, wherein women are the guiders of the people among the more than 100 different clans “Navajo clans are matrilineal. So, our mother’s clan is the most important one,” said Sister Chato. “Our clans tell other Navajos how we are related to one another. We are not just individual persons with our own identity.”

What about Mother Henriette Delille, a French-speaking woman of African descent, who was born in 1812 and lived a part of her life as a mistress in a social system known as placage, whereby wealthy white European men supported free women of color and who may become the first American of African descent to become saint.  At the age of 24, Mother Delille experienced a religious transformation that led to the formation of the Sisters of the Holy Family order. The community of Creole nuns cared for those on the bottom rung of antebellum society, administering to the elderly, nursing the sick and teaching people of color, who at the time had limited education opportunities. To this day, Holy Family nuns continue good works around the globe.

What about Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton?  Saint Seton was born into a wealthy Episcopalian family in New York City on August 28, 1774. Her father, Dr. Richard Bayley, was a doctor and one of the first health officials in New York City. Her mother, Catherine Charlton Bayley, died when Elizabeth was only three years old. Saint Seton was the first American to be canonized as a saint. She was raised Episcopalian, but later converted to Catholicism. Through the struggles and tragedies she faced in life, she remained devout. She is the founder of the first Catholic schools in the United States and is the patron saint of Catholic schools, widows, and seafarers.

Or what about the Jesuit and Franciscan Sisters who in In 1888 started work on what would become the  Red Cloud Indian School at the request of, and on a site designated by, Chief Red Cloud. Using primarily their own labor and that of local Indians, they began construction of the main mission building. All of the bricks for the building were made on the mission ground from local clay and lime. Not only did Red Cloud meet spiritual needs, it also provided an education to Indians through its school.  The following decades brought many challenges to the new school, namely poverty and disease. But it also brought growth and hope: Students came to the school from as far away as Wyoming and New Mexico, and the land began to produce enough food to feed the growing number of students and staff. A Catholic-Indian conference was held each year, drawing a large number of clergy and religious as well as Native American laypeople. Records from the Franciscan Sisters note that Masses held at the beginning of each conference featured singing in both Latin and Lakota—a telling sign of the cooperation and partnership between the Lakota and the Jesuits.

Certainly Mother Katharine Drexel would qualify.  Katharine Drexel, heiress to a multi-million dollar estate, entered the convent and decided to give her life to the service of her Native and African-American brethren. while on a trip with her family out West, Katharine witnessed firsthand the terrible condition of the Native people. She also took note of the hardships endured by African-Americans, who struggled to find work, education, and fair treatment. She and her sisters dove wholeheartedly into supporting the missions that served these populations. In 1891, she took her first religious vows, and with some other sisters founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People. In addition to the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, Katharine took a fourth one: “To be the mother and servant of the Indian and Negro races.”  During her life, Mother Katharine founded dozens of missions and schools for black and Native Americans in sixteen states. Among them is Xavier University in New Orleans, the only historically-black Catholic college in the country.

Not to mention Sister Margaret Hillary, OP who has served the community on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana as pastoral counselor and youth minister in the community. Along with fellow Dominican Sister Edith Schnell, Sister Margaret Hillary they serve families at St. Ignatius Mission Parish and helped the community navigate through the pandemic.  With a grant from Sisters on the Frontlines, they paid for  internet service for a family of nine with several children who suffer from chronic health issues. The Sisters on the Frontlines was launched during the pandemic with the exceptional goal of providing 1,000 Catholic sisters with $1,000 each. Each sister used the funds to help an individual or family suffering extremely adverse affects due to the pandemic. The Sisters on the Frontline  are prophetic witnesses and voices of hope. They are close to those who are in need and they are trusted by people of all walks of life. Sisters on the Frontlines was formed by an alliance including Catholic Extension, Congregation of St. Joseph, Conrad N. Hilton Fund for Sisters, FADICA, GHR Foundation, Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities, Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland, and the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas

In a LinkedIn post, Cindy Gallop suggests that women on International Women's Day and every other day should not use words like empower or celebrate, instead use words like hire, promote, pay, bonus, fund, invest and so on. Certainly the women featured herein have a different view:  More like how can I help, what do you need?
