The Grotto

The National Sanctuary of our Sorrowful Mother, popularly known as The Grotto, is a Catholic outdoor altar and sanctuary located in the Madison South district of Portland, Oregon, founded in 1924 by Servite Fr. Ambrose Mayer. It's mission is to forever be a place where the human spirit can seek peace and consolation it " embraces and supports people of all cultures and all faiths who seek a place of prayer and meditation; The Grotto values the dignity of everyone."

The sanctuary covers 62 acres  set both at the foot of, and atop, a 110 foot cliff. It is a ministry of the Servite Friars, Order of Friar Servants of Mary. A large meditation hall is at clifftop level extends down to the foot of the cliff; the cross on the hill is visible many miles away. In addition to a church, there are several thousand feet of trails, including a trail of the Stations of the Cross, along which visitors may pass in contemplation through botanical gardens. The Grotto also features a full-service Conference Center, and a Gift Shop.

The Grotto offers a sanctuary of peace, prayer and natural beauty for all people.

Work began on The Grotto in September 1923, and the first Mass was celebrated less than a year later, on May 29, 1924. Three thousand people came to the Mass, during which Archbishop Alexander Christie offered this prayer:

“Let this be a sanctuary of peace for all peoples of the earth and surely in this day a sanctuary is needed. Torn with differences, strife, and grief, the world needs sanctuary where the human spirit can seek peace and consolation.”

Since then, millions have come to this beautiful spot, designated a national sanctuary in 1983.

The Grotto Funder: Fr. Ambrose Mayer

The Grotto was established in 1924 by Friar Ambrose Mayer, a native of Ontario, Canada, who was sent to the United States where he was a Servite pastor for the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon.  When Mayer’s mother was close to death after giving birth to his little sister, he begged God to spare her life. He promised that if she survived, he would someday do something great for the Church. His mother lived!

As the first Servite pastor of the Archdiocese of Portland, Father Ambrose kept his eyes open for an opportunity to fulfill his promise and give glory to God and his Mother, Mary. When he spotted a “for sale” sign next to an unkempt patch of wilderness previously used by a railroad as a quarry, he knew the land was perfect. The asking price was $48,000 — no small amount, for Father Ambrose only had $3,000, but he was no stranger to miracles and he trusted in God. Father Ambrose offered his 1%, which was surprisingly accepted as a down payment, but still had to raise the other $45,000.  God gave him a helping hand. Pope Pius XI wrote a letter — in his own handwriting — giving a special apostolic blessing to those who, “in any way or measure, show their good will and assist in erecting the Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother in Portland.”

A national campaign raised the balance of the funds needed to pay for the land.

Born in Canada, Ambrose joined the Friar Servants of Mary in 1918. The religious order of priests also known as the Servite Order was founded in Florence, Italy, in the middle of the 13th century by seven men who sought to lead lives of penance and prayer. The order’s goal is to sanctify humanity through devotion to the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, under her title of Mother of Sorrows. They wear black habits and follow the Rule of St. Augustine. Their most well-known saint is St. Peregrine, patron saint of those with cancer.

Perpetual Adoration: This involves having the Blessed Sacrament exposed and available for adoration 24/7. 
Periodic Adoration: This involves scheduled times for Eucharistic Adoration, such as a weekly or monthly event. 
Conducted Adoration: This involves a structured format for adoration, often including scripture readings, hymns, or meditation. 

Father Jewel Aytona's Homily, February 22, to close the 4-Day Eucharistic Parish Mission did not disappoint. Fr. Jewel's homily was based on the Magi's visit to venerate - latria in the Greek - the infant Jesus, in Bethlehem. He went over the distinctions between dulia, hyperdulia,  and latria, crucial for a proper understanding of the many subtle yet decisive differences at play in Catholic theology and practice.

Adoration, Inspiration & Conviction Inspiration This gentleman can use his hands to maneuver his motorized wheel chair that needs to be transported in a custom van. Not much else he can do. Yet, he attends Holy Eucharistic Adoration and today, even stayed for the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Sanctity of Life: The Catholic Church believes that human life is a gift from God and is therefore sacred and worthy of respect at every stage, from conception to natural death. Inherent Dignity: Every human being, regardless of age, ability, or circumstances, possesses inherent dignity and is valued as a person. Conviction Matthew 26:40-45 He said to Peter, “Couldn't you watch with me even one hour? Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.

Christianity, and particularly in the Catholic and Orthodox traditions, distinct forms of veneration or reverence can be found, each one of them carrying specific connotations and finding different devotional expressions, sort of like  levels of veneration, are traditionally known in the original Greek, as dulia, hyperdulia, and latria, where the term latria has long been  reserved,  for the type of worship due to God alone. These other three types of veneration are used to refer to the veneration given to angels, saints, relics, icons, and the Virgin Mary. Indeed, veneration is a type of honor distinct from the true worship,that is, adoration, which is due to God alone.

Father Jewel also discussed the context richness of  various types of communication between individuals, starting with poor-context snail mail, phone, video and in person.  All this to emphasize  how blessed the Vancouver, WA community is  to have in-perdon access  7 X 24 X 365 to the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.

This past Sunday, The Holy Redeemer Parish, Vancouver WA. kicked off the 2025 four-day Eucharistic Parish Mission with Father Jewel Aytona, CPM, a perpetually professed Religiouĺs of the Congregation of the Fathers of Mercy. His Apostolate Ministry is missionary preaching.

The objective of the 4-Day Eucharistic Parish Mission is to "rekindle Eucharistic amazement, through reflection upon Eucharistic Miracles, Saints' stories and Catholic Doctrine.

Father Jewel kicked off the event delivering an excellent, engaging and enlightening homily during Mass and offered an invite for the evening sessions.

Surprisingly, tonight's presentation was as well attended as a regular Sunday Service.

During tonight's presentation went over blessed Fulton Sheen's inspiration for his dedication to a daily Hour of Adoration.

Father Aytona went over a number of Eucharistic Miracles, including the eight century doubting Basilian monk, who had doubts about the real presence of Christ in the sacred species. As he was offering Mass, in a church dedicated to St. Legontian in the town of Lanciano, when he pronounced the words of the consecration, the host was miraculously changed into physical flesh and the wine into physical blood.Later the blood coagulated and the flesh remained the same. These relics were kept in the cathedral.


Centuries later, at the initiative of Archbishop Pacifico Perantoni of Lanciano, and of the provincial minister of the Franciscan Conventuals of Abruzzo, and with authorization from Rome, in November 1970 the Franciscans of Lanciano decided to have the relics examined scientifically.




Edoardo Linoli, a professor of anatomy and pathological histology, and of chemistry and clinical microscopy, and former head of the Laboratory of Pathological Anatomy at the Hospital of Arezzo, concluded the "miraculous flesh and blood," were of human origin, the blood was type AB, the host was a piece of human heart and there were no traces of preservatives. He presented his findings on March 4, 1971 and published in "Quaderni Sclavo di Diagnostica Clinica e di Laboratori."

Saint Damian, Courageous Reformer, Monk, Cardinal & Doctor of the Church

February 21 marks the feast of Saint Peter Damian, Patton Saint of sleep difficulties,  was an Italian reforming Benedictine monk and cardinal. Dante placed him in one of the highest circles of Paradiso as a great predecessor of Francis of Assisi and he was declared a Doctor of the Church on 27 September 1828. Saint Peter Damian spent himself, with lucid consistency and great severity, for the reform of the Church of his time. He gave all his spiritual and physical energies to Christ and to the Church, but always remained, as he liked to describe himself, Petrus ultimus monachorum servus, Peter, the lowliest servant of the monks.

 "One of the most significant figures of the 11th century, ... a lover of solitude and at the same time a fearless man of the Church, committed personally to the task of reform." - Pope Benedict XVI 

Peter was born in Ravenna, the youngest of a large but poor noble family. Orphaned early, he was at first adopted by an elder brother who ill-treated and under-fed him while employing him as a swineherd. After some years, another brother, Damianus, who was archpriest at Ravenna, had pity on him and took him away to be educated.  Peter made such rapid progress in his studies of theology and canon law, first at Ravenna, then at Faenza, and finally at the University of Parma, that, around the age of 25, he was already a famous teacher at Parma and Ravenna.

At around1035, Peter gave up his secular calling and, avoiding the compromised luxury of Cluniac monasteries, entered the isolated hermitage of Fonte Avellana, near Gubbio. As novice and as a monk, his fervour was remarkable but led him to such extremes of self-mortification in penance that his health was affected, and he developed severe insomnia.

Once he recovered, Peter was appointed to lecture to his fellow monks. Then, at the request of Guy of Pomposa and other heads of neighboring monasteries, he lectured to their brethren. At  about 1042, Peter wrote the life of Romuald for the monks of Pietrapertosa. Soon after his return to Fonte Avellana, he was appointed manager or housekeeper of the house by the prior, who designated him as his successor. In 1043 he became prior of Fonte Avellana and remained so until his death in February 1072.

A zealot for monastic and clerical reform, Peter introduced a more severe discipline, including the practice of flagellation that became a model for other foundations, even the great abbey of Monte Cassino. There was much opposition outside his own circle to such extreme forms of penitence, but Peter's persistent advocacy ensured its acceptance, to such an extent that he was obliged later to moderate the imprudent zeal of some of his own hermits.

Petrt also added of the daily siesta, to make up for the fatigue of the night office. During his tenure of the priorate, a cloister was built, silver chalices and a silver processional cross were purchased, and many books were added to the library

Although living in the seclusion of the cloister, Peter Damian closely watched the fortunes of the church, and like his friend Hildebrand, the future Pope Gregory VII, he strove to reform the church. After almost two centuries of political and social upheaval, doctrinal ignorance and petty venality among the clergy had reached intolerable levels. When the scandalous Benedict IX resigned the pontificate into the hands of the archpriest Gregory VI in 1045, Peter hailed the change with joy and wrote to the new pope, urging him to deal with the scandals of the church in Italy, singling out the wicked bishops of Pesaro, of Città di Castello and of Fano.

Peter communicated with the Emperor Henry III. He was present in Rome when Clement II crowned Henry III and his consort Agnes, and he also attended a synod held at the Lateran in the first days of 1047, in which decrees were passed against simony.

Peter, a prolific writer published a number of open letters on a variety of theological and disciplinary controversies. About 1050, he wrote Liber Gomorrhianus addressed to Pope Leo IX, containing a scathing indictment of the practice of simony, as threatening the integrity of the clergy. Meanwhile, the question arose as to the validity of the ordinations of simoniacal clerics. Peter wrote a treatise, the Liber Gratissimus, in favour of their validity, a work which, though much combatted at the time, was potent in deciding the question in their favor before the end of the 12th century.

Netflix's July 22 is a typical Extended Release Culture Pill. In the movie, Paul Greengrass tells the true story of the aftermath of Norway's deadliest terrorist attack. On 22 July 2011, 77 people were killed when a far-right extremist detonated a car bomb in Oslo before carrying out a mass shooting at a leadership camp for teens.

Number five, the conflict has placed--and continues to place--stress on tools of American statecraft, from military stockpiles to sanctions (and so much else). We believe the continued conflict is bad for Russia, bad for Ukraine, and bad for Europe. But most importantly, it is bad for the United States. Given the above facts, we must pursue peace, and we must pursue it now. President Trump ran on this, he won on this, and he is right about this. It is lazy, ahistorical nonsense to attack as "appeasement" every acknowledgment that America's interest must account for the realities of the conflict. That interest--not moralisms or historical illiteracy--will guide President Trump's policy in the weeks to come. And thank God for that
