Teddy Bear OK – Muhammad, Not OK

“Hooray for San Francisco; we need these people in” in South Florida, reads an article posted in the Internet by the Broward County Atheists Group, immediately following the desecration of a Catholic Church in San Francisco, California and in response to Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly, who brought national attention to the incident.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom dismissed O'Reilly's comments and characterized the incident as a non-issue

"This debate really is about San Francisco values. The Bill O'Reillys of the world are threatened by San Francisco because we value diversity, universal health care and civil rights for all. They will exploit any controversy to attack our values." Said Newsom

Now comes word that teacher Gillin Gibbons, charged with inciting religious hatred, was convicted today of the less-serious charge of insulting Islam for letting her pupils name a teddy bear "Muhammad," and was sentenced to 15 days in prison. Gibbons could have received 40 lashes and six months in prison if found guilty of inciting religious hatred.

No, this is not another example of how San Francisco, or California for that matter,
is run by "far-left secular progressives who despise the military, traditional values and religion," as Mr. O'Reilly might opine. This incident is unfolding in Khartoum, Sudan. Gibbons, a British teach found guilty under Article 125 of the Sudanese criminal code, faces deportation to Britain. On the other hand, if the secular progressives continue to advance their agenda, this incident could be a common occurrence in the US – consider that the Christina Bible is now being viewed as containing hate speech!

November 30, 2007 Update

A popular, all-female TV show this morning discussed the issue, in essence indicted Ms. Gibbons for being "culturally insensitive". One of them mentioned how prior to her performance in Turkey, she was given a voluminous tome to study so she would not be out of line. In the same breadth she described how when she went to Germany, she was expecting everyone there, including airline pilots to speak English - apparently these ladies feel more qualified than Ms. Gibbons, to teach in the Sudan. It is fair to say that Mr O'Reilly would categorize these ladies as" far-left secular progressives who despise the military, traditional values and religion", who may feel that the desecration of the Catholic Church in San Francisco is just an expression of the First Amendment rights in the US.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press' Mohamed Osman reports today that "Thousands of Sudanese, many armed with clubs and knives, rallied Friday in a central square and demanded the execution of a British teacher convicted of insulting Islam ..... saying, "No tolerance: Execution," and "Kill her, kill her by firing squad."" Osman goes on to report that "A Muslim cleric at Khartoum's main Martyrs Mosque denounced Gibbons during one sermon, saying she intentionally insulted Islam" - the hypersensitivity toward Islamic issues continues, while insulting Christianism seems to be just fine.
