February 26, 2024, Monday of the Second Week in Lent - Selected Reflections

"The only time our Lord asked the apostles for anything was the night He went into agony. Not for activity did he plead but for an hour of companionship." - Venerable Fulton J. Sheen

On the night before he was betrayed,  Jesus went to pray in the Garden of Gethsemane. He took Peter, James, and John.

When he returned, Jesus found the disciples sleeping. He said to Peter, "so you could not keep watch with me for one hour?

It used to be  easy to muse at the choices the disciples made, either because of lack of faith or intelligence, such as when Jesus

"began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days.He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do" - Mark 8:31

 No longer.

One hour of companionship with the Body, Blood, Soul & Divinity of Jesus Christ.

When I keep watch with Christ during Adoration for just one hour, I'm often reminded of how Peter, James, and John repeatedly fell asleep despite his apparent anguish and his requests that they pray with Him.
