Teachers rarely swallow false dates—they swallow an inverted timeline and call it compassion. The Watchtower Framework caught the missing records and scope leaps in the PBS Teachers packet, but it missed its deadliest trick: keeping every fact historically true while demoting the vital few required to explain American history. Enter Addendum E1—the five-minute rank-order audit built to stop sequence hazards before they reach the classroom.

The PBS Teachers post is a shortened pull from Glen Mourning’s 2019 PBS Education blog, “Teaching Black History Beyond Slavery and Black History Month.” The framework treats that piece as a secondary narrative package, not as a settled fact. Here is the watch applied to it.​

The quoted claim treats “African history and the heritage of an entire group of people” as something U.S. schools commonly open with slavery. That collapses three different subjects:
The history of the African continent (dozens of civilizations, languages, and slaving systems over millennia).
The history of the specific populations that became African Americans (the Middle Passage onward).

U.S. history, in which chattel slavery is not an optional preface; it is structurally necessary to explain the Constitution’s compromises, the cotton economy, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the 13th–15th Amendments.
Mourning’s own article begins the recommended alternative with Black Panther and a rhetorical question about whether pre-colonial Africa “actually began very similarly” to Wakanda. Wakanda is fiction. Real West and West-Central African states (Mali, Songhai, Kongo, Dahomey, Ashanti, etc.) had writing in some cases, long-distance trade, and monumental architecture; they also practiced slavery, sold captives to Arabs and later to Europeans, and conducted wars of expansion. Starting “African history” with those kingdoms is historically legitimate. Treating American slavery as a “mistaken” first reference for African-American students in an American school is a category error. The primary record of how that population entered the United States is the slave trade and plantation system. Omitting it is not “richer”; it is incomplete.

The current rubric punishes undefined labels, missing records, and scope leaps. It does not punish a clean set of facts in the wrong order.

Teachers do not mainly swallow false dates. They swallow a new sequence and call it compassion.

R4 (scope leap) and D1.3 (scope-creep insulation) are close and still miss the failure mode: every item can be true, the packet can even cite kingdoms that existed, and the vital few for this classroom use-case still get demoted. That is a ranking defect, not a sourcing defect. Education packages live on ranking. An addendum is the right patch, not a rewrite of AIS.
