Orange Sup, Orange Squeeze

Orange Sup, Orange Squeeze

July 30, 2008

By now you've heard the bad news: California is confronting a budget hole of historic proportions, one that will require billions of dollars in spending cuts, increases in fees and perhaps even higher taxes - No, this is not referring to the state of affairs in California as of July 2008, but to what then Gov. Gray Davis and the California Legislature were faced with in December 2002.

On Monday July 28, 2008, California Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata canceled a vote on a Democrat-proposed spending plan facing sure defeat aided by minority Republicans who threatened to block the Democrats' plan over its provisions for raising taxes. Click here for story

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has threatened to slash the pay of more than 200,000 state workers to the federal minimum of $6.55 per hour to help ease the state's budget crisis and to put an end to overtime pay for all but critical services, a freeze on state hiring and the immediate layoff of nearly 22,000 temporary, seasonal and student workers, because "there is a real and substantial risk that the state will have insufficient cash to pay for state expenditures"

And what is the Orange County Board of Supervisors doing to prevent another county bankruptcy? Abdicate their responsibility by handing off a crippling expenditure to direct democracy: The OC BOS Tuesday unanimously approved an initiative that would require voters to OK any increases in public workers' pensions, with predictable results. The special interest dinosaur will take a page out of the California Teachers Association demanding a "responsible budget solution by increasing taxes"!

Supervisor Chris Norby, taking a page out of Senator Kerry's playbook voted against the move, before he voted for it:

"This initiative is political posturing and comes ten years too late. The plan sends a message that supervisors can't trust themselves to do the right thing, Do we really want to vote to save ourselves from ourselves?" - Supervisor Chris Norby voting against the initiative before he voted for it.

Will the real Republican in the Orange County Board of Supervisors stand up and be counted?
