Rancho Santa Margarita. Calif. – According to Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD) spokesperson Lt. Jeff Hallock, On Sunday, April 26, 2015, Orange County Sheriff’s Department investigators arrested Adrian Coates, 18, Huntington Beach, during a traffic stop in the city of Costa Mesa. Coates was the driver of a stolen vehicle pursued by the Huntington Beach Police Department earlier in the day.
On Sunday, April 26, 2015 at approximately 2:50 a.m., a Huntington Beach police officer-involved shooting occurred following a pursuit and felony traffic stop of a reported stolen vehicle. During the felony traffic stop Coates made a U-turn and accelerated towards officers, resulting in the officer-involved shooting. Coates drove the vehicle past the officers and fled the immediate area. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department airship, “Duke,” assisted ground units and located the vehicle abandoned a short distance away.
As is protocol for all Huntington Beach Police officer-involved shootings, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department was called and assumed responsibility for the investigation. Following the preliminary investigation and collection of evidence at the scene, investigators located and arrested Coates at approximately 11:00 p.m. Coates was uninjured and indicated he had not been hit by the officer’s gunfire during the incident.

Coates was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and booked into Orange County Jail. He is being held on $50K bail and scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, April 28, 2015.
