Dante's Inferno is the first part of Dante Alighieri's 14th-century epic poem, The Divine Comedy. It is an allegory of the soul's journey toward God, in which the character Dante, representing all humankind, recognizes and rejects sin by journeying through the nine circles of Hell, guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil. Democrats are not there yet.
The story begins with Dante lost in a dark wood on the morning of Good Friday, symbolic of being astray from the "right way" of salvation. He is met by the shade of Virgil, sent by Beatrice (symbol of Divine Love) from Heaven to guide him. Virgil leads Dante through the various realms of Hell, which is depicted as a funnel-shaped abyss of nine concentric circles located within the Earth, where sinners are punished in a manner that symbolically fits their crimes (a concept known as contrapasso).
The circles of Hell, in descending order of increasing sinfulness, are:Vestibule: For the "neutral" or the "opportunists" who would not commit to either good or evil. They are forced to eternally chase a meaningless banner while being stung by wasps and flies.

The gluttonous wallow in vile, putrid slush under a continuous, icy rain, guarded by the three-headed dog Cerberus.
Circle 4 (Greed): Hoarders and spendthrifts joust by pushing great weights with their chests, their obsession with material goods rendering them unrecognizable.
