Free Concerts at Saddleback College
January 24, February 14, March 27, April 24 and May 8
The Music Department at Saddleback College presents Concert Hour, a variety of individual and ensemble performances on Thursdays from Noon to 1 p.m. in Fine Arts Room 101. Admission is free.
Songs of Love and Loss on January 24. Soprano Eileen O’Hern and Saddleback faculty member Norman Weston perform two song cycles about love and loss. Also included in the program are Robert Schumann’s Frauenliebe und Leben and Mr. Weston’s September Songs set to texts of Dorothy Parker.
Duo-Piano Recital on February 14. Saddlback music professor Dr. Rebecca Rollins joins her duo-piano partner, Dr. Robert Sage, music professor at Azusa Pacific University in a dynamic two-piano concert.
The Medium on March 27. Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium will be presented in concert with members of Saddleback College ’s Vocal Music Program under the direction of Dr. Scott Farthing. This one hour long, two act opera was first presented by Columbia University in 1946 and is the story of Madame Flora and a dark incident that occurs during one of her fraudulent séances.
Music and the Politics of Oppression on April 24. Each generation of performing artists is influenced by the environment surrounding their creative activities. Some careers change and flourish, while others languish in exile. How composers, writers and performers responded to oppression from within the United States during the 20th century is be the topic of this concert hour. Dr. Carmen Dominguez gives a pre-concert lecture on the guiding theme of the next Symphony Orchestra performance.
Saddleback Music Students in Recital on May 8. Voice, instrumental, piano and jazz students perform in recital. Come and show your support for these aspiring musicians.
Saddleback College is located at 28000 Marguerite Pkwy in Mission Viejo , just east of Interstate 5 at the Avery Parkway exit. Parking is available in Lot 12. Take Avery Parkway to Marguerite Parkway turn left to the second traffic light, which is Saddleback’s Marguerite entrance. Turn right into the campus and take the second left to “ Theatre Circle ,” turning right into Lot 12.
The Music Department has established a comprehensive program which is considered to be one of the finest in California : a complete lower-division curriculum for transferring music majors, numerous performance groups, private and group lessons, a full concert series with faculty and guest artists, and general music courses. The nationally recognized faculty is dedicated to performance and to teaching in all areas such as vocal, instrumental, jazz, guitar and piano. Other music classes include harmony, musicianship, composition, history and appreciation of western art music, rock, jazz and world.
