Figures Don't Lie, The NYT Figures: Number of Deportations

Comparing deportation numbers requires distinguishing between removals (formal court orders) and returns (turning individuals away at the border without formal orders).

Comparison of Deportations by Administration
  • Bill Clinton (1993–2001): Totaled approximately 12.3 million expulsions, the highest of any president. However, the vast majority (11.4 million) were "returns" at the border rather than formal removals.
  • Barack Obama (2009–2017): Holds the record for the highest number of formal removals, totaling approximately 3.1 million over two terms. His peak year was 2012, with over 400,000 deportations.
  • Donald Trump (2017–2021; 2025–Present):
    • First Term: Conducted roughly 1.5 million deportations (combined removals and returns). This was significantly lower than Obama's totals.
    • Second Term (Ongoing): As of early January 2026, the administration has carried out over 605,000 deportations during the past year.
  • Joe Biden (2021–2025): Approximately 4.4 to 4.7 million total repatriations. While formal interior removals were lower than previous administrations, Biden oversaw a high volume of border returns and pandemic-era "Title 42" expulsions.
