In January 2026, the strategic importance of Nicolás Maduro and his role in the "evil axis" has reached a critical turning point following his capture by U.S. forces in early January. 

Maduro mattered as the Western Hemisphere's central node for a coalition including China, Iran, Russia, and Cuba. For over a decade, this alliance used Venezuela for: 


• Sanctions Evasion: Venezuela served as a vital part of a global "shadow fleet" or "ghost fleet" of tankers. These vessels used deceptive tactics to transport sanctioned oil between Iran, Venezuela, and Russia, often relabeling it to reach Chinese refineries.

• A Strategic Logistics Node: Under Maduro, Venezuela provided a permissive environment for Iranian and Russian operations in the Americas. Iran used the country for drone technology exchange, training, and financial facilitation, while Hezbollah and Hamas reportedly maintained logistical support networks within the region.

• Counter-Hegemonic Hub: Venezuela's "anti-imperialist" stance was weaponized to build influence across the Global South, positioning the country as a leader in a world order designed to undermine U.S. dominance. 

The End of the "Evil Axis" (January 2026 Status)

The current crisis in Venezuela has triggered a rapid reorientation of global trade and power: 

• China’s Gamble in Jeopardy: China poured an estimated $100 billion into Venezuela over the decades, with $60 billion in loans often backed by crude oil. In early 2026, Chinese independent refineries are already pivoting away from Venezuelan oil toward Iranian crude as supply lines to the West begin to reopen.

• Iranian Withdrawal: Iran has reportedly already withdrawn significant funds from Venezuela as the Maduro regime collapsed, aiming to protect assets worth an estimated $2 billion.

• Energy Realignment: The U.S. has moved to secure Venezuela's massive energy resources, recently seizing sanctioned tankers like the Marinera. The Trump administration has announced a deal for Venezuela to supply up to 50 million barrels of oil to the United States, effectively integrating it back into a "Fortress Americas" energy market.

• Russia’s Loss of Influence: For Vladimir Putin, Maduro was an anchor for a sanctions-resistant energy system. The collapse of the China-Russia-Venezuela triangle is described as the "defining logistics event of 2026," potentially leaving Russian energy investments stranded. 

While Maduro’s capture has decapitated the leadership of this axis in the Western Hemisphere, the remaining partners—specifically China and Iran—are reassessing their strategies as the U.S. exerts "maximum leverage" over Venezuela's new interim authorities

Meanwhile; as the New York Times 'reports," Words Matter;  One day after the capture of Maduro reports from intelligence sources indicate that Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is ready to flee to Russia.

The loss of Maduro severely threatens Cuba’s economy, which relied heavily on cheap subsidized Venezuelan oil
