Coto de Caza, Ladera Ranch - Crime and Vandalism Trending, 4Q2007 Final Report

Coto de Caza, Ladera Ranch - Crime and Vandalism Trending, 4Q2007 Final Report

February 2, 2008

The OCSD final crime and vandalism statistics for 2007 show a marked decrease in crime and vandalism activity for the unincorporated community of Ladera Ranch.

Not so much so for Coto de Caza. While the Ladera Ranch figures show a consistent downward trend since 1Q2006 (when we first started this report), the Coto de Caza figures show an up and down movement with the highest crime and vandalism recorded in the second quarter of 2007, and one of the lowest in the fourth quarter,

but even then some 400% higher than the figures for Ladera Ranch – an open community with twice the population compared to the gated enclave.

We know that the Ladera Ranch community has been proactive in their public safety initiative, including lobbying the board of supervisors, the CHP and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, - or what a former CZ board member refers to as “making a pubic spectacle”, whereas Coto residents are more apathetic. Seems like public spectacles work!

The good news for Coto de Caza residents is that the crime and vandalism rate is at an a time low, since we started this report. The bad news is that a rape was reported in October of 2007, including an aggravated assault in December and nine larceny reports for the quarter. The question is whether the community will take a page out of the Ladera Ranch Public Safety committee and lose the apathy!
