Rancho Santa Margarita, CA - On Thursday, March 27, at approximately 2:00 PM, Katie Carlson, 10, Ladera Ranch, called 9-1-1 to report a fire in the garage of her condominium. She was home early from school and alone when she heard a loud pop and smelled smoke. Sheriff’s Dispatcher Jennifer Demers answered Katie’s call and remained on the line with her until deputies and firefighters arrived.
Katie’s quick action helped to control the fire and minimize the damage to neighboring condo units. Dispatcher Demers was able to insure the safety of Katie by making sure that she remained outside the condo despite her concerns for her cats that were inside.
Katie is described by dispatcher Demers ad incredibly articulate on the phone with.
The OCSD has nominated Katie for a 9-1-1 Hero Award from the 9-1-1 for Kids organization. Katie will meet Dispatcher Demers in person on Friday, April 4, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the Loma Ridge Facility / Emergency Communications Bureau
