2021 Washougal City Council Voting Guide

As CS Lewis might say:  You must pay taxes to make government not more responsive, but a more clever devil, so it can make you pay even more taxes!

Washougal WA - The candidates for the 2021 City Council can best be described as the Get Along Gang.  We expected the group to be engaging and to take a public position on the Disc Golf Course Project, a decision that disturbed the environment without any environmental permits nor residents' input, and puts children at risk, Their behavior is disappointing, to put it mildly.

We sent each qualified candidate a survey, and except for Ms Rochelle Ramos, candidate for Mayor of the City of Washougal, no one responded.

Below is a copy of the survey, Ms. Rochelle's response and our recommendations.

Survey

As you know, the Washougal City Council in what can best be described as a boneheaded decision & at worst, political malpractice; Without approved environmental studies nor residents' input, destroyed #HartwoodPark's natural habitat frequented by residents, in favor of an adult Disc Golf Course catering to a small outside vocal minority, right next to a children's park

To date

1. City has not addressed children's safety from errant discs or pedophiles

2 . Destroyed a natural Habitat frequented by residents In favor of an outsider vocal minority

3. Nuisance. residents already experiencing a concentration of vagrants & subsequent nuisance

A. What have you done for or against the Disc Golf Course project?

B. If elected, what are you prepared to do regarding the Disc Golf Course project

C. How would you rate the job the Teachers Union is doing,?

D. Do you support teaching kids Critical Race Theory

E. What are the top three issues facing the city & what do you plan to do about it?

The Sound of Silence

Sadly, only Ms Rochelle Ramos had the courage to respond with something that is worse than a non-response response: Paraphrasing her: "sorry, it's happening in my watch but I cannot do anything about it" - Such response is inconsistent with her leadership campaign rhetoric.

We also filed a Freedom of Information Act Request with the City's Parks Commission through Michele Wagner via email. We got no response By our count, the Board, which Ms. Ramos is a member of, has failed to comply with the Washington Freedom of Information Act

Rochelle Ramos sits on Parks Board, running for Mayor

We should note that Paul Greenle, running for Mayor, did not respond on behalf of the City or as an individual running for Mayor.
In his website, Greenle states that

" ... he goes to lots of trainings and conventions to bring back knowledge, and has completed the Association of WA Cities Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership, WA Department of Commerce NW Economic."

Rewarding Greenle with the title of Mayor would just make him a more clever devil

Paul Greenle - member of the Get Along Gang

We give the candidates the benefit of the doubt for their collective failure to respond to a survey. What cannot be overlooked is that none of the candidates has taken a public position for or against the Disc Golf  Course Project, either in Council Meetings or campaign stops. Hence the moniker The Get Along Gang!

Recommendations

1. If candidates are unwilling to talk to you before the election, or take a public position on important issues to the community, you can be sure you will never hear from them if they are elected.

2. The Disc Golf Course debacle illustrates that we now have a government that works for the government and not for the taxpayer. Voting for any incumbent is voting for more of the same

3. Voting for Greenle for Mayo is likewise a vote for more of the same

4. Voting for Ms Ramos is extremely risky, as she seems two-faced. However, she might be the best of the worse candidates for Mayor

Non-Response from Ms Ramos

From: Rochelle Ramos

Date:  Oct 3, 2021

Good morning,

I cannot do much about the Disc Golf Course at this time, my only influence is through being on the Washougal Park Board and we do not make the decisions, only recommendations for City Council to vote on. It’s their decision and more than likely the disc golf will be completed by the time I would take office in January. What I have been suggesting to those concerned is to attend a City Council meeting, they are held via Zoom, or send an email to the City Manager with concerns.

When Mayor, I’d like to focus more on what the Citizens of Washougal have asked for in regards to community spaces and spending.

As Mayor, I would not be the final say, I’d really only be one of seven City Council Members with a vote. That said, I feel I would be one decision maker who will ask questions, request input, and focus more on listening to what people want before giving my vote on anything.

Thank you for reaching out,

Rochelle Ramos
