American Energy Independence in Seven Years

The United States is on track to achieve independence from imported Middle East oil within the next seven years due to the boom in domestic and North American energy development.  Consequently, the United States would have eventually ratcheted down our huge military presence in the Middle East defending oil imports.  But just like television scenes of the attack on the .

United States embassy during the 1968 TET Offensive destroyed public support for the Viet Nam War, last week’s television images of protests against American embassies has devastated public support for a continuing military presence in the Middle East.  The American public will soon demand a crash program to exploit domestic energy resources to facilitate a Middle East withdrawal

American Exceptionalism’s military and economic triumphs in the first half of the 20^th Century were directly attributable to secure domestic access to immense amounts of oil.  President Coolidge wrote in 1924 after WW I; “the supremacy of nations may be determined by the possession of available petroleum and its products.”  During World War II, the United States domestic gasoline output for the military grew 18 times and the production of aviation fuel jumped by 80 times.  Half the total weight of supplies shipped overseas to U.S. allies during the war consisted of petroleum products. 

Following defeat of Germany’s Afrika Corps in 1943, Middle East oil resources were rapidly commercialized.  After the war, massive new volumes of cheap Middle East oil froze the world price of oil at between $2.77 and $3.60 a barrel from 1948 to 1972.  During period, American domestic production withered and the bulk of U.S. oil refining capacity was relocated to coastal ports on the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic and Pacific. 

  

On December 2, 1970, just as oil prices were about to climb, Congress passed the Environmental Protection Agency, which had a huge negative financial impact on domestic oil industry.  The number operating oil refineries in the U.S. fell from 301 in 1970 to 134 today.  Land-based oil production fell from 9.6 million barrels a day in 1970 to only 5.1 million in 2005.  Even with new off-shore production in Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico, total U.S. domestic oil production fell from 10.8 million barrels a day in 1980 down to 8.3 million barrels in 2005.  To cover the shortfall as demand continued to grow; imports rose from 1.3 million barrels a day in 1970, providing 12% of supply to a peak at over 12 million barrels in 2005, accounting for 63% of all U.S. oil supply. 

But since 2008, fracking and other new drilling technologies have fostered a domestic 25% surge in oil production and a 40% jump in natural gas production.  driven down Demand for imported oil has fallen to less than 45% of supply, the lowest level since 1997.  Cheap new supplies from Canadian tar sands drove down imports of Middle East oil to less than 10% of U.S. supply.

Radical Islam’s coordinated attacks against American embassies across the Middle East has fractured the region’s respect for U.S. military power and emboldened our enemies.  Taliban forces this weekend brazenly penetrated the perimeter of a the joint U.S. and British air base in Afghanistan, blew up 6 Marine Harrier “jump jets” and killed one of the Marine’s highest decorated Air Squadron Leader.  After NATO forces suffered their 51^st murder by an Afghanistan government forces, the U.S. military suspended all operations with patrolling with Afghan troops. 

In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson claimed a military victory as American and South Vietnam forces slaughtered ten times as many Viet Cong as they lost in the TET Offensive.  But bloody television images of the battle at the U.S. embassy in Saigon convinced Americans that the Vietnamese could never be pacified.  Similar television images of anti-American violence in the Middle East have convinced the American public that the Middle East cannot be pacified. 

The American public will soon politically coalesce around a major increase in domestic energy exploration and development, in order to facilitate the elimination of reliance on imported Middle East oil.  Fortunately, America has technology and resource potential to rapidly make this initiative a reality.

Middle East Seeks to Transform the United States

We warned early this year in “Arab Spring Turns To Winter” and numerous other articles that the Obama Administration initiative to put the full-force of America’s military and diplomatic clout behind leveraging “Arab Spring” protests to transform the Middle East into progressive democracies would lead to a disaster for the United States.  Yesterday’s deaths of four diplomatic personnel during coordinated attacks by Sunni Muslim

Jihadists on American Embassies in Cairo, Egypt and Benghazi, Libya confirms that U.S. policy has been the change agent that converted stable and mostly friendly dictatorial regimes into impoverished hell-holes.  Run by murderous tribal thugs, their only common interest is hatred of America as the Great Satan.

It was well known that the eleven year anniversary of the “911” terrorist attack on the United States would present an excellent opportunity to stage a highly visible attack on an American soft target.  Middle Eastern papers were running inflammatory headlines and articles, such as Al Jazeera’s lead picture of a bound and blindfolded Arab under the headline: “Iraq Execution Spree under the Spotlight.” 

In Cairo, approximately 3,000 Islamist supporters of the Salafist Sunni Muslim movement gathered at the US embassy in supposed protest against the amateur English language film, which had recently been dubbed into Arabic.  Although there were “thousands of riot police guarding the American embassy,” protestors stormed into the inner wall of the embassy, tore down an American flag and put a black flag adorned with white characters that read, "There is no God but Allah and Mohammed is his messenger," an emblem often used by Islamic radicals.  Egyptian police eventually intervened without resorting to force, but the black flag remained up the rest of the day for all to see.

For the Salafist radicals, the political and recruiting value of demonstrating they can overwhelm the symbol of United States at the same location where last year tens of thousands turned out in opposition to former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, is invaluable.  The U.S. Cairo Embassy compounded the perceived defeat of American power by issuing a statement that seemed to echo fear of radical Islam:

"The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims - as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions,"

In Benghazi, Libya, where the United States militarily first intervened last year under the guise of a NATO humanitarian mission, which allowed the U.S. Air Force to carpet-bomb Western Libya and U.S. Special Forces “boots on the ground” to supervise Colonel Gadhafi’s execution, a radical Islamist group calling themselves: “Islamic Law Supporters," but known to be Ansar al-Sharia, planned and organized another attack on a U.S. consulate from their Libyan government sanctioned military compound in Benghazi. 

The US ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, had travelled to Benghazi from the capital city of Tripoli in what was described a short visit.  But the trip may have been an effort to move to the birth-place of the revolution against Colonel Gadhafi as a safe-haven from expected protests in the capital city of Tripoli.   When the embassy came under attack, the Ambassador was moved by security personnel to a secret “safe-house.  The location of the safe-house was leaked to the Salafists and the pictures of the ambassador appear to indicate he was beaten to death and his body dragged through the streets.

The propaganda value of the successful attacks on the U.S. embassies and the first murder of a U.S. ambassador in 33 years are astronomical.  As CNN national security contributor Fran Townsend stated: 

"One such breach of an embassy or consulate's walls or security on any given day would be tremendous news. ... The fact that two of them happened on the same day that is the 9/11 anniversary where Americans are remembering those that we lost, you have to ask yourself, what are American officials trying to understand about this and whether or not these two are related?"

President Obama and his supporters celebrate the Arab Spring as a wonderful geo-political success and they have cranked up the Central Intelligence Agency to fund and equip a brutal civil war in Syria.  Their Middle East initiatives may have sought to liberate tens of millions of oppressed people from stable dictatorships, but it delivered the people into the hands of barbaric butchers.  With the transformation of the Middle East almost complete, the butchers are now ready to try to transform the United States.

Challenges For Israel to Bomb Iranian Nuclear Facilities

	Israel is running out of time to use air power to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities and delay Iranian efforts to build and deploy nuclear weapons.  The “fighting season” in the eastern portion of the Middle East runs from March to early October, and then heavy weather sets in.  Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated last

week that Israel could independently attack Iran's nuclear program, but acknowledged that the attack would only delay, rather than completely destroy it. 

Israel has entered a long-term crisis as a result of the Arab Spring radicalizing the Middle East.  Under Muslim Brotherhood control, Egypt is re-militarizing the Sinai Peninsula, while Iran is becoming the most powerful entity in the Middle East.  Israel sees its military position weakening over the long-run, due to its size, despite its current military superiority.  Evolving events potentially may undermine that military superiority, and therefore Israel feels pressured to act now to preserve it. 

Israel does not have the United States’ armada of B-2 bombers, equipped with the Massive Ordnance Penetrator that could cause tremendous damage to the deep and hardened underground Iranian weapons sites.  The United States also has positioned the Enterprise and Dwight D. Eisenhower air craft carriers, and the Iwo Jima, “Big Deck Amphibious Warfare Ship”, to be within close striking distance of Iran.  But President Obama seems unwilling to order a strike, unless Iran becomes more aggressive by curtailing oil shipment through the Straits of Hormuz.  Consequently, Israel will have to rely on its own capability to confront Iran.  

Israel can field a strike force of approximately 100 Lockheed Martin F-16 and 25 Boeing F-15 Boeing F-15 fighter-bombers equipped with long range conformal fuel tanks, supported by up to ten converted Boeing 707 aerial refueling tankers.  Since the lower speed and greater vulnerability of the tankers would restrict their ability to enter Iranian airspace, the American built bombers will only have limited time over their targets.  

According to the Stratfor Reports, the Israeli air force would have to choose one of three potential air corridors to attack Iran.  Each route would “pose serious threats to Israel's aircraft and cause significant diplomatic problems with Iran -- and potentially the rest of the Islamic world -- if they allowed Israeli jets to cross unchallenged.”  The northern route would circumvent Syria's air defense network by flying between Cyprus and Syria, and then proceeding eastward along the Turkey-Syria border into northern Iraq, and then south into Iran.  The shortest route is to fly directly over Jordan and Iraq and into central Iran, but it is expected that Iraq would provide intelligence and warning to Iran, given their close defense relationship.  The third route would fly south over Saudi Arabia and across the Persian Gulf.  But this path would fly directly into Iran’s premier air defense missile systems and be seen by Iran as declaration of war by Saudi Arabia.  

Iran has been sending troops and supplies to reinforce Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s army.  It seems very likely that the Free Syrian Army rebel forces would be willing to coordinate attacks on Syria’s air defense network during air strikes on Iran.  Such cooperation would allow the Israeli air force’s slow and vulnerable aerial refueling tankers to spend the maximum time loitering close to Iran. This option would allow Israel a direct line of attack to their targets and would avoid the operational and political risks of flying over Saudi Arabia, Jordan or Turkey.

With “clock running out”, there is a high probability that Israel will wield its full military strength to bomb Iran in the next six weeks.  The Arab Spring that the United States helped sponsor and funded has created tremendous instability in the region.  As stable tyrants were replaced by armed tribal and ethnic forces, chaos has ensued.  The coming confrontation between Israel and Iran is sure to heighten this turmoil.

Obama-Backed Syrian Rebels Assassinate Christian Defence Chief

The “Syria War” took a horrific escalation today as Syrian Defense Minister Dawoud Rajha, a Christian, and two other senior officials were assassinated in a suicide bombing by the United States backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebels; which was immediately followed by a retaliatory Hezbollah bombing of three tour busses in Burgas, Bulgaria that wounded 32 Israelis. The FSA attack appears to have been coordinated to

occur just before today’s United Nations Security Council meeting on imposing sanctions on Syrian leaders, including Rajha. The U.N. subsequently suspended today’s sanction vote as the war went global.

Since the middle of 2011, the Obama Administration, Saudi Arabia and Turkey have openly backed a Jihadist Sunni Muslim rebellion in Syria as a vehicle to bring pressure against Syria’s key ally, Shite Muslim Iran. As we reported in Obama Tries to Wag a Dog that Bites Back and other articles, the President had hoped that his Syrian adventure would rally patriotic military support just in time for the November elections, in a similar manner as his surreptitious support of the rebel movement and then aerial bombing led to the ouster Colonel Muammar Gadhafi from Libya. But as the United States has escalated equipping the FSA; Russia, China, Iran and Hezbollah have escalated their aid of Syria. Last month a U.S. made Turkish reconnaissance fighter was shot down over Syrian territorial water by a Russian missile.

Over the last twelve months, as rebels failed to take any cities or hold any territory, the Syrians have been resupplied with the most sophisticated weapons their Russian benefactors have to offer. To compliment $5 billion in purchases of highly competitive Russian armaments over the last ten years, Russia just shipped Pantsyr-S1 and Buk-M2 anti-aircraft missiles that are known to be highly effective against air or sea attacks to Syria. Brig. Gen. Itay Baron, head of the Israeli Military Intelligence, also confirmed that together Syria and Iran now have approximately 3,500 ballistic missiles, and Hezbollah has about 60,000 rockets and missiles aimed at Israel or any other invader. This figure has increased by 1000% in the last six years.

In April, Kofi Annan, the former United Nations Secretary General was appointed to act as a special U.N. envoy. Shortly thereafter, he reported that the Syrian government led by Bashar al-Assad had agreed to a six-point peace plan, which laid out a framework for a cease-fire that did not involve the president leaving power. Syria agreed to the cease fire and allowed 300 cease-fire observers into Syria as part of the “U.N. Stabilization Mission.” According to Stratfor Global intelligence Report, the FSA used the cease fire to smuggle more weapons and foreign Jihadi fighters into the country. On June 16th Mission Head Gen. Robert Mood told the BBC that because neither the Syrian government nor the FSA was willing to seek peace, U.N. had suspended its observer mission in Syria.

Over the last three months, the United States and Russia have continuously escalated their forces in and around Syria to the largest naval confrontations since the Viet Nam War. The United States has deployed four Carrier Air Wing Strike Groups to the Middle East; including the USS Enterprise, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Abraham Lincoln and the Harry S. Truman (under way in the Atlantic Ocean). The American armada is supplemented with the USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group, composed of a battalion sized and heavily reinforced Marine Expedition Unit. The Russians have responded by sending their Admiral Kuznetsov Carrier Strike Force, five naval heavy cruisers, five Amphibious Ready Groups and numerous helicopter gunships to patrol the Syrian Coast as a demonstration of Russia’s willingness to fight for Syria.

In what appears to be a prelude to today’s suicide bombing, the London Daily Telegraph reported yesterday that President Barack Obama had warned America’s western allies and Syria’s opposition groups that the United States “can do nothing to intervene in the country’s crisis until after November’s presidential election.” But since May, the United States CIA officers operating out of Turkey have been actively helping smuggle arms to the Syrian opposition through the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood.

It is unclear so far if the United States had any direct or indirect involvement in the suicide bombing in the Syrian capital. But the White House told the BBC immediately after the bombing that “Syrian President Bashar al Assad is losing control of Syria, and the international community must help work toward a political transition.” Shortly thereafter, the Obama Administration’s bravado was silenced by the Hezbollah retaliation in Bulgaria. But what is crystal clear, is that the Obama Administration has successfully cranked up a new Middle East war just in time for the November elections.
