The New York Times runs an Oped about honesty while being dishonest.

What the card actually is

Margaret MacMillan (Oxford / Paris 1919) is doing the job she always does: periodization. Storm metaphors, Uppsala’s 65 state-based conflicts as a high since 1946, Ukraine in year five, great powers stuck in asymmetric wars, “those within [the order] got too comfortable and complacent,” “too much acceptance — even approval — of bad behavior,” then the pull-quote the desk chose:
We must prepare ourselves, which begins with being honest about the seriousness of the moment we’re in, and accepting that our fragile system is faltering.

The series note is the tell: Times Opinion will explore “the disintegration of the postwar international system and how countries are adjusting as America steps aside.” So “we” and “our system,” on this platform, mostly means the 1945–2020 American-led order, not the newsroom.59eec4

Tone-deaf, ironic, or hypocritical?
Tone-deaf — yes, as packaging.
Same week, same masthead: a news card that failed honesty tests (undefined “purge,” 40 anonymous sources, adverse ground replaced by motive) sitting next to an Opinion card that scolds the public to “be honest” and admit the system is faltering. If “the system” includes the information system that tells people what happened, the juxtaposition is tin-eared. The shattered globe is doing the same work the Donahue beret photo did: mood first, dossier never.
Ironic — yes, and this is the clean hit.
MacMillan’s causal line is that orders rot from inside: comfort, complacency, tolerance of bad behavior by the people who live off the order. Apply that sentence to prestige journalism and you get the Donahue scorecard without any partisan add-on:

load-bearing epithets in the headline
anonymous insulation on the why
the other side’s stated ground omitted or recoded as vice

one act inflated into an era
That is “acceptance of bad behavior” inside the epistemic order, not just inside NATO. The irony does not require MacMillan to be a hack. It requires the paper to publish her diagnosis while its news product keeps performing the symptom.
Hypocritical — the institution, not the author.
Hypocrisy needs one actor and two standards. MacMillan did not write the Donahue piece and is not the standards editor. Charging her with hypocrisy is a reach. Charging The New York Times is fairer: the Opinion desk sells “honesty about a faltering system”; the News desk, on a same-cycle national-security story, shipped a card WWS would not let you quote as record. That is one brand claiming a virtue its other door does not practice.

The sharper point her own sentences allow
If you take MacMillan literally, “being honest about the moment” would include:
Wars, force-posture shifts, and four-star cuts as policy contests, not only as morality plays.
The postwar order’s own record — Iraq, Afghanistan/Abbey Gate, institutional sclerosis, European free-riding, Chinese revisionism — as causes of erosion, not only “America steps aside.”

The press as part of the fragile system, not the priest standing outside it.

The card does not do that last step. “We aren’t ready” is aimed at governments and publics. It is not aimed at the megaphone. That is why it reads as elite weather reporting: the world became disorderly when it stopped matching the paper’s map.

Yes ironic, yes institutionally hypocritical, yes tone-deaf to run the honesty sermon on the same pipe that failed the honesty test.
