Eucharistic Miracle findings presented March 4 1971: Dr. Linoli concluded the "miraculous flesh and blood," were of human origin. He presented his findings on March 4, 1971 and published in "Quaderni Sclavo di Diagnostica Clinica e di Laboratori" the same year.









The Catholic Catechism (1374 ) declares that "The mode of Christ's presence under the Eucharistic species is unique. It raises the Eucharist above all the sacraments as "the perfection of the spiritual life and the end to which all the sacraments tend." In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist "the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained." In Day 192 of Father Mike's CIY podcast, he expands on paragraphs 1396-1401. "The unity of the mystical body. The Eucharist makes the church. Those who receive the Eucharist are united more closely to Christ. Through it, Christ unites them to all the faithful in one body, the church. Communion, renews, strengthens, and deepens this incorporation into the Church already achieved by baptism

In the eighth century, a Basilian monk, who had doubts about the real presence of Christ in the sacred species, was offering Mass, in a church dedicated to St. Legontian in the town of Lanciano. When he pronounced the words of the consecration, the host was miraculously changed into physical flesh and the wine into physical blood. In Day 192 of Father Mike's CIY podcast, he expands on paragraphs 1396-1401. "The unity of the mystical body. The Eucharist makes the church. Those who receive the Eucharist are united more closely to Christ. Through it, Christ unites them to all the faithful in one body, the church. Communion, renews, strengthens, and deepens this incorporation into the Church already achieved by baptism
Later the blood coagulated and the flesh remained the same. These relics were kept in the cathedral.

Centuries later, at the initiative of Archbishop Pacifico Perantoni of Lanciano, and of the provincial minister of the Franciscan Conventuals of Abruzzo, and with authorization from Rome, in November 1970 the Franciscans of Lanciano decided to have the relics examined scientifically.

Edoardo Linoli, a professor of anatomy and pathological histology, and of chemistry and clinical microscopy, and former head of the Laboratory of Pathological Anatomy at the Hospital of Arezzo, was entrusted with the study.


Dr. Linoli concluded the "miraculous flesh and blood," were of human origin, the blood was type AB, the host was a piece of human heart and there were no traces of preservatives. He presented his findings on March 4, 1971 and published in "Quaderni Sclavo di Diagnostica Clinica e di Laboratori" the same year.



In an interview by ZENIT, a non-profit news agency that reports on the Catholic Church and matters important to it from the perspective of Catholic doctrine, Linoli explained that "as regards the flesh, I had in my hand the endocardium. Therefore, there is no doubt at all that it is cardiac tissue."

In regard to the blood, the scientist emphasized that "the blood group is the same as that of the man of the holy Shroud of Turin, and it is particular because it has the characteristics of a man who was born and lived in the Middle East regions."

"The AB blood group of the inhabitants of the area in fact has a percentage that extends from 0.5% to 1%, while in Palestine and the regions of the Middle East it is 14-15%," Linoli said.

In 1973, the Higher Council of the World Health Organization (WHO) appointed a scientific commission to verify the doctor Linoli's conclusions. The work was carried out over 15 months with a total of 500 examinations. The conclusions of all the researches confirmed his findings. The extract of the scientific research of WHO's medical commission was published in New York and Geneva in 1976.

While Wikipedia describes the Tower of Babel as a myth, it describes the Babylonian exile as historically correct. The Babylonian captivity or Babylonian exile is the period in Jewish history during which a large number of Judeans from the ancient Kingdom of Judah were captives in Babylon, the capital city of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, following their defeat in the Jewish–Babylonian War and the destruction of Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem. The event is described in the Hebrew Bible, and its historicity is supported by archaeological and extra-biblical evidence.

According to Jeremiah chapter 29 "This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says about Ahab, son of Kolaiah, and Zedekiah, son of Maaseiah, who prophesy lies to you in my name: I am handing them over to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, who will kill them before your eyes.j

And because of them this curse will be used by all the exiles of Judah in Babylon: “May the LORD make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in fire,”

Contrary to what experts like Robin Hanson might say: "..
the most likely AI scenario looks like lawful capitalism, with mostly gradual (albeit rapid) change overall. Many organizations supply many AIs and they are pushed by law and competition to get their AIs to behave in civil, lawful ways that give customers more of what they want compared to alternatives. Yes, sometimes competition causes firms to cheat customers in ways they can’t see, or to hurt us all a little via things like pollution, but such cases are rare. The best AIs in each area have many similarly able competitors. Eventually, AIs will become very capable and valuable. (I won’t speculate here on when AIs might transition from powerful tools to conscious agents, as that won’t much affect my analysis." Artificial intelligence in the hands of Bill Gates, Google and other "superintelligent organizations" as Hanson might say, is a type of Tower of Babel - soon to be destroyed but not before it takes is toll in humanity, or self-implode like Google's Gemini.




Nate Silver at Silver Bulletin writes:
“It’s increasingly apparent that Gemini is among the more disastrous product rollouts in the history of Silicon Valley,. The AI’s results are “heavily inflected with politics” that render it “biased” and “inaccurate” — and Google’s explanations are “pretty close to gaslighting.” Indeed, the programming involved “deliberately altering the user’s language to produce outputs that are misaligned with the user’s original request — without informing users of this,” which “could reasonably be described as promoting disinformation.” Google should “pull the plug on Gemini” and “provide the public with a thorough accounting of how it went so wrong, and hire, terminate or reposition staff so that the same mistakes don’t happen again.”

But fixing Google’s Gemini is not a technical but a cultural issue. For decades, it has thrived on its progressive culture. For example, Google listed CA GOP Idiology as Nazism. After allegations of election interference in 2020, Google tried to shield Dominion Software. Google Censors Pro-Life, Pushes Abortion Agenda. Google is a participant in ventures it knows directly benefit Communist China. Google Supports China’s Communist Party More Than US Military. Google Continues Censorship of Criticism of CCP. Google employees demand the company does not work with US Immigration. Guess what an artificial intelligence tool will output when developed in an environment such as Google's? Garbage In, Garbage Out.Clearly Gemini does not deliver on Hanson's promise: "Many organizations supply many AIs and they are pushed by law and competition to get their AIs to behave in civil, lawful ways that give customers more of what they want compared to alternatives."

Pope Francis in Laudate Deum writes:
"The ethical decadence of real power is disguised thanks to marketing and false information, useful tools in the hands of those with greater resources to employ them to shape public opinion. 29
Innovations start with the notion of a human being with no limits, whose abilities and possibilities can be infinitely expanded thanks to technology. In this way, the technocratic paradigm monstrously feeds upon itself." Google's CEO Sandar Pichai makes Pope Francis sound prophetic; Introducing Gemini, he writes "Every technology shift is an opportunity to advance scientific discovery, accelerate human progress, and improve lives. I believe the transition we are seeing right now with AI will be the most profound in our lifetimes, far bigger than the shift to mobile or to the web before it. AI has the potential to create opportunities — from the everyday to the extraordinary — for people everywhere. It will bring new waves of innovation and economic progress and drive knowledge, learning, creativity and productivity on a scale we haven’t seen before."


Arguably, Pfizer is a "superintelligent organization" in the line of Robin Hanson. Pfizer's Dr Becci Corkill refers to the Knowledge Doubling Curve as an enabler of innovation and the reason why consumers should trust Pfizer's COVID Vaccine. Google's Gemini would argue that after 120 billion births, pregnancy is too dangerous because apparently
gynecologists have not learned much, therefore Infanticide aka abortion should be legal.


In Laudate Deum, Pope Francis issues another warning: "23. It is chilling to realize that the capacities expanded by technology “have given those with the knowledge and especially the economic resources to use them, an impressive dominance over the whole of humanity and the entire world. Never has humanity had such power over itself, yet nothing ensures that it will be used wisely, particularly when we consider how it is currently being used… In whose hands does all this power lie, or will it eventually end up? It is extremely risky for a small part of humanity to have it”


And in paragraph 24 continues "...Not every increase in power represents progress for humanity. We need only think of the “admirable” technologies that were employed to decimate populations, drop atomic bombs and annihilate ethnic groups. There were historical moments where our admiration at progress blinded us to the horror of its consequences."


In paragraph 25. Pope Francis argues for a paradigm shift: "Contrary to this technocratic paradigm, we say that the world that surrounds us is not an object of exploitation, unbridled use and unlimited ambition....." 29. "The ethical decadence of real power is disguised thanks to marketing and false information, useful tools in the hands of those with greater resources to employ them to shape public opinion."


While experts like Robin Hanson appear to have faith on a responsible development of artificial intelligence, and Pope Fracis lays out a road map to achieve it, I say to err is human, but oo really foul up requires Artificial intelligence tools like Google's Gemini.

The Catechism has shown us how the common good begins with the good of the individual. It further shows us that each individual can participate in the pursuit of the common good for all—and that this participation is not optional, but an obligation. Fr. Mike in his Catechism In a Year Podcast episode 253 explains the nature of this obligation in quite simple terms: “see a need, fill a need.”

Myrtilla Miner, born March 4, to a poor family near Brookfield, New York saw a need and filled it: Wanting to become a teacher, she took out a loan. She taught in New York and then went to Mississippi to pay off her school loan.  No need for debt relief, or debt cancelation.

In Mississippi Myrtilla saw slavery firsthand. She sought permission to hold classes for African-American girls in the community.  Her request was denied. Myrtilla found that freed slaves in the North, were not much better off than the slaves in Mississippi.

Because of her sympathy for the slaves, she was forced to leave Mississippi.In 1849, Miner returned to New York, where she taught in the town of Friendship, and developed a plan to train African American girls to become teachers for their people. She asked, “can slavery be removed when the free colored man remains degraded?”

With the financial aid from a Quaker philanthropist, donations of school supplies from friends and encouragement of Rev. Henry Beecher Towe, Myrtilla opened  a school for African-American girls . Initially Myrtilla held classes in her home, but soon started receiving threats, and with the help of benefactors helped her find a safer and permanent home.

From the beginning, Miner faced “rowdyism and incendiarism.” Much of this harassment targeted the teachers and students. Mobs attempted to burn down Miner’s school. The school met with formal opposition from the white community and city leaders such as former Mayor Walter Lenox. On May 6, 1857, Lenox bitterly denounced Ms. Miner and her school in the National Intelligencer.  Despite a constant barrage of bigotry, harassment, and threats of violence, Miner remained defiant and determined to teach African American girls. In the end, she prevailed. One of her students remarked that she was “one of the bravest women I have ever known.”

Due to illness, Miner stepped down from teaching in 1857. By then, the Board of Trustees included Samuel Janney, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s husband Calvin Stowe, and her brother Henry Ward Beecher.  Harriet Breecher wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin

Within five years six graduates of the Normal School for Colored Girls were teaching in schools.

Though her efforts to educate free African American girls were a moderate and indirect approach to ending slavery, the University of the District of Columbia traces the history of public higher education for African Americans in the city to Myrtilla Miner's School.

Pio of Pietrelcina, widely known as Padre Pio, was an Italian Capuchin friar, priest, stigmatist, and mystic. Padre Pio joined the Capuchins at fifteen and spent most of his religious life in the convent of San Giovanni Rotondo. While the Feast of Sr. Padre Pio falls on September 23, 2024, his devotion to prayer helps with a Lenten Reflection.

"Prayer is the best weapon we possess, the key that opens the heart of God" - St. Padre Pio

 Padre Pio was known for his deep love for the mass and his devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. He built a hospital to address physical and spiritual suffering.

Padre Pio had the miraculous gift of bilocation, being in two places at once. He received the stigmata after praying in church.


Saint Padre Pio had the gift of reading hearts in order to help penitent receive the fullness of God's mercy in the Sacrament of Penance, often hearing confessions 12 to 15 hours a day:  Customer care agents listening to mostly bad news eight hours per day easily become jaded and can become depressed if there's no relief valve. Call center burnout can lead to persistent feelings of negativity, anxiety and depression that culminate in low agent productivity and morale. Left unattended, it can snowball into physical conditions like headache, palpitation, panic attack and heart failure.

Saint John Paul II canonized Padre Pio on June 26, 2002.

St. Padre Pio joined the Capuchins at fifteen and spent most of his religious life in the convent of San Giovanni Rotondo. He was marked by stigmata in 1918,

He was the founder of the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, a hospital built near the convent of San Giovanni Rotondo.

After his death, his devotion continued to spread among believers all over the world. He was beatified on 2 May 1999 and canonized on 16 June 2002 by Pope John Paul II. His relics are exposed in the sanctuary of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, next to the convent of San Giovanni Rotondo.

The pause heard around the World: Google's Pause on Gemini

On December 6, 2023, Google and Alphabet's CEO Sundar Pichai introduced Gemini as Google's "largest and most capable AI model"

In the introduction, Pichai writes "Every technology shift is an opportunity to advance sciIentific discovery, accelerate human progress, and improve lives. I believe the transition we are seeing right now with AI will be the most profound in our lifetimes, far bigger than the shift to mobile or to the web before it. AI has the potential to create opportunities — from the everyday to the extraordinary — for people everywhere. It will bring new waves of innovation and economic progress and drive knowledge, learning, creativity and productivity on a scale we haven’t seen before."






On the other hand Pope Francis in Laudate Deum writes:
"The ethical decadence of real power is disguised thanks to marketing and false information, useful tools in the hands of those with greater resources to employ them to shape public opinion. 29

Prichai supports Pope Francis' argument as he writes: "That’s what excites me: the chance to make AI helpful for everyone, everywhere in the world."

And the hyperbole continues "Nearly eight years into our journey as an AI-first company, the pace of progress is only accelerating: Millions of people are now using generative AI across our products to do things they couldn’t even a year ago, from finding answers to more complex questions to using new tools to collaborate and create. At the same time, developers are using our models and infrastructure to build new generative AI applications, and startups and enterprises around the world are growing with our AI tools."

Pfizer's Doctor Becci Corkill used a similar argument to sell the COVID Vaccine. Pfizer's Dr Becci Corkill refers to the Knowledge Doubling Curve as an enabler of innovation
and the reason consumers should not be afraid of the COVID Vaccine. The same people claim that after 120 billion births, gynecologists have learned nothing and pregnancy is so dangerous, abortion should be legalized to save the would-be mother.

Prichai continues "This is incredible momentum, and yet, we’re only beginning to scratch the surface of what’s possible. We’re approaching this work boldly and responsibly. That means being ambitious in our research and pursuing the capabilities that will bring enormous benefits to people and society, while building in safeguards and working collaboratively with governments and experts to address risks as AI becomes more capable. And we continue to invest in the very best tools, foundation models and infrastructure and bring them to our products and to others, guided by our AI Principles." Then all hell broke loose.


Prichai's pledge sounds very much like rocket science - like the Gemini Project: Project Gemini's objective was the development of space travel techniques to support the Apollo mission to land astronauts on the Moon. It was the second United States human spaceflight program to fly. Gemini was conceived in 1961 and concluded in 1966. The Gemini spacecraft carried a two-astronaut crew. Ten Gemini crews and 16 individual astronauts flew low Earth orbit (LEO) missions during 1965.

Prichai then ups the ante: "Now, we’re taking the next step on our journey with Gemini, our most capable and general model yet, with state-of-the-art performance across many leading benchmarks. Our first version, Gemini 1.0, is optimized for different sizes: Ultra, Pro and Nano. These are the first models of the Gemini era and the first realization of the vision we had when we formed Google DeepMind earlier this year. This new era of models represents one of the biggest science and engineering efforts we’ve undertaken as a company. I’m genuinely excited for what’s ahead, and for the opportunities Gemini will unlock for people everywhere."

In no time, Google makes Pope Francis' Laudate Deum analysis sound prophetic: Forbes' Megan Poinski writes "It’s been a week of apologies for Google after taking its Gemini AI human image generation capabilities offline. A week ago, the company paused that ability after Gemini returned historically inaccurate racial depictions of people. An apology came almost immediately from Google senior vice president Prabhakar Raghavan, in which the company acknowledged its mistakes and promised to work toward improvement. Google CEO Sundar Pichai also sent an internal note to employees on Tuesday, saying the issue was “completely unacceptable,” and saying teams are working around the clock to fix the issue."


Earlier, Elon Musk posted on X that Google executives acknowledged Gemini's shortcoming and would be fixing them;





None of that seemed to matter to the Woke crowd like Wired's David Gilbert's who blamed Google's pause not on its shortcomings but on the "far-right" "Google has hit pause on Gemini’s ability to generate images of people after a far-right backlash to its historical depictions," he wrote.

Blaming the far-right for Gemini's flaws is like blaming a gun for killing an innocent victim abd not the the criminal. Not unlike the argument used for gun control.


Introducing woke Gemini:







When users asked Gemini for images of historical Chinese kings, it displayed Asian men in royal regalia. But when users asked it to create an image of an English king, the top results included a woman and a black man.


Requests for pictures of a pope returned renderings of nuns holding the papal ferula.


A request for an image of a 1943 German soldier generated a black soldier sporting a Wehrmacht uniform.


When users asked for an image of a black or an Asian couple, you got it.

When asked for an image of a white couple, it unleashed a woke morality lecture: ‘To avoid perpetuating harmful stereotypes and biases,’ Gemini is ‘unable to generate images of people based on specific ethnicities and skin tones.’

Fixing Google's is not a technical but a cultural one. For decades, it has thrived on its woke culture, where culture is the beliefs, values, traditions, and opinions of a group of people,  influenced by region, religion, information and groupthink

Pope Paul III set up a council to study problems in the church. The report, Consilium de emendenda ecclesia, formed the basis for the work of the upcoming Council of Trent. This report also came into the hands of the Protestant opposition, who used its criticisms to bolster their own attack on the Catholic Church

The Council of Trent was perhaps one of the most important events in the history of the Roman Catholic Church, which shaped its direction for at least the next 300 years.

As a patron of the arts, he oversaw completion of Michelangelo's fresco the Last Judgment, depicting the Second Coming of Christ and the final judgment by God.


Pope Paul III established in 1549, the religious order, the Society of Jesus, known as Jesuits, of which Pope Francis is a member of.He also approved the Spiritual Exercises developed by St. Ignatius Loyola, which includes meditations, prayers and Contemplative practices to deepen one's relationship with God.

Pope Paul III died in 1549 and is buried in a tomb designed by Michelangelo.

Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty was born on this day in 1898 in Kiskeam, County Cork, Ireland.

 

Monsignor O’Flaherty was a charismatic Irish priest assigned to work for the Holy See while studying in Rome, used his connections to save lives of thousands, estimated at 65,000.

When the Gestapo learned what Monsignor O’Flaherty’s was doing, they painted a white line across St Peter's Square dividing the neutral Vatican from Nazi-controlled Rome. Guards stood watched, but never saw him, because he used disguises and became known as the "Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican" - as portrayed by Gregory Peck in the movie The Scarlet and the Black.

When the war was over, the Gestapo chief Herbert Kappler, who wanted to capture, torture and kill Monsignor O'Flaherty was sentenced to life in prison, Monsignor O’Flaherty visited the convicted war criminal. In prison, Kappler converted to Catholicism.


Monsignor O'Flaherty was an Irish Catholic priest, a senior official of the Roman Curia and a significant figure in the Catholic resistance to Nazism. During the Second World War, O'Flaherty was responsible for saving 6,500 Allied soldiersout and Jews. His ability to evade the traps set by the German Gestapo and Sicherheitsdienst (SDq q) earned him the nickname The Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican

When the Nazis began to crack down on prominent Jews and aristocratic anti-fascists. the Monsignor hid them in farms, monasteries, convents, his old college and his own residence. He visited American prisoners held in harsh conditions in Italian jails and began to offer shelter to Allied servicemen who turned up at the Vatican looking for sanctuary. His operation helped escaped prisoners-of-war and shot-down pilots. He recruited a group to assist him and set up a network of safe houses in Rome to hide them. Allied military who evaded capture or were able to escape, made their way to the Vatican seeking asylum and went to the Irish Embassy there – the only English-speaking embassy to remain open in Rome during the war. 

The great singer, Delia Murphy Kiernan was an Irish singer and collector of Irish ballads. She recorded several 78 rpm records in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. During World War II, she aided Vatican official, Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty,  while her husband, Dr. Thomas J. Kiernan, was the Irish Ambassador in Rome from 

By the end if the war, Monsignor and his group had helped more than 6,500 Jews, American and British Soldiers escape the Nazis and he was referred to as “The Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican.” He also became a master of disguises to avoid capture from the Germans when he had to go beyond the 'White Line’ on his rescue missions. The White Line was a line painted on the streets outside the Vatican on the instructions of Herbert Kappler, the head of the Gestapo, to mark the point where the Vatican’s authority ended, and Nazi rule began. Kappler had learned of O’Flaherty’s operation and reminded O’Flaherty that if he was caught beyond that line he would be executed! In March 1944, after the Italian Resistance killed 33 German soldiers in a bomb attack, Hitler demanded revenge. Kappler ordered 10 Italians killed for each German soldier killed. His men killed 335 people in the Ardeatine Caves outside Rome. It was the worst atrocity on Italian soil during the War. Kappler also tried several times to kidnap and kill O’Flaherty and placed a bounty of 30,000 Lire on his head. Meanwhile, O’Flaherty continued to outwit Kappler with fake credentials and documents, a secret communication network and by evading capture by the Gestapo.

At the War Crimes trial after the war, Kappler was sentenced to life imprisonment with no parole for the Ardeatine Caves massacre. In a surprising move, Italy’s most hated prisoner wrote to his old rival inviting Msgr. O’Flaherty to visit him in prison; the Kerry cleric immediately went to meet with his former foe. Their meetings became regular affairs during which they discussed religion and literature. The Monsignor joked, “Here I am with this man who put 30,000 lire on my head and now we are sort of pals.” The feeling was mutual as Kappler described O’Flaherty as “a fatherly friend”. After his sentence, Kappler, who was Protestant, called on the Monsignor and the two men prayed together after which Msgr. O’Flaherty baptized Kappler. In what was probably Monsignor O’Flaherty’s greatest victory, Italy’s most notorious Nazi was welcomed into the Catholic Church by the very man he had tried so hard to kill.

St Gregory of Narek, most beloved Armenian theologian and Doctor if the Church

February 27 marks the feast of  Saint Gregory of Narek and Doctor of the Church,  and  the most beloved and significant theological and literary figure of the Armenian religious tradition.

Gregory was an Armenian mystical and lyrical poet, monk, and theologian. He is venerated as a saint in the Armenian Apostolic and Catholic Churches and was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Francis in 2015.


The son of a bishop, Gregory was educated, ordained, and later stationed at Narekavank on the southern shores of Lake Van, modern Turkey. Scholars consider Gregory the most beloved and significant theological and literary figure of the Armenian religious tradition.

He is best known for his Book of Lamentations, a significant piece of mystical literature which serves as a confessional prayer book in many Armenian religious households. His works have inspired many Armenian literary figures and influenced Armenian literature in general throughout the ages

Saint Gregory was born in a village on the shores of Lake Van  circa 945,  in the Armenian town of Andzevatsik, located in modern-day Turkey. 

After the death of his parents. Gregor and his older brother were raised by a scholarly uncle who had them educated at the Narek monastery in the village of Narek on the south shore of Lake Van, which is also located in modern-day Turkey, and remained a monk there until his death in 1003.  The monastery was a prominent center of learning located in what is now Turkey. Gregory too entered the monastery and was ordained in 977

There are over 10,000 saints recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. However, only a few dozen of them have been named a doctor of the church, an honorific that recognizes the importance of their teaching, scholarship and writings.

A professor of theology, Saint Gregory wrote a mystical interpretation of the Song of Songs,

which is notable for its ample use of earlier Greek commentators on the biblical book, particularly Gregory of Nyssa. Though St. Gregory of Narek is the author of many works, his fame rests upon the Book of Lamentations

also known as the Book of Prayer. He described his poem as “an encyclopedia of prayer for all nations.” This classic of Armenian literature has been translated into 30 languages. The Russian text of the Book of Lamentations was set to music in 1985.

His poetry is deeply biblical and suffused with the images, themes, figures, and events of salvation history, while at the same time being intensely personal. In form, his theology is not an intellectual reflection upon God, but rather a dialogue with God in prayer, “speaking with God from the depths of the heart.” According to Gregory, the goal in life is to reach God, to achieve union with God, insofar as human nature allows, to erase the differences between God and humans. This union cannot take place at the level of the intellect, but only at the level of the heart and feelings through experience of God

St. Gregory of Narek lived and died as a member of Armenian Apostolic Church, making him the only Doctor who was not in communion with the Catholic Church during his lifetime.

To the present day, the Armenian Church preserves a very ancient tradition of Christianity. Armenia was the first nation to adopt Christianity officially,  years before Constantine converted to Christianity and initiated the Christianization of the Roman Empire.

In the aftermath of the Council of Constantinople in 553, however, the Armenian Church severed its ties with the Latin- and Greek-speaking churches over Christological differences, becoming most closely aligned with the Syriac and Coptic Orthodox Churches. As in many Christian traditions prior to modern times, in Armenian Christianity, monasticism was seen as a fundamental expression of the Christian life. Hundreds of vibrant monasteries were founded. Unlike western monasteries, which tended to be isolated from lay persons and political centers, Armenian monasteries were deeply integrated in the ordinary lives of lay Christians, and monks were seen by kings as trusted advisors and confidants. Monasteries were also centers of Christian learning and education. Kings often sent their sons to monasteries to be educated. The chief scholars were known as vardapets, Armenian for “church teachers.” One such vardapet was St. Gregory of Narek.

Cardinal Angelo Amato, the Prefect for the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, pointed to four areas of special distinction in the doctrine of St. Gregory of Narek which contributed to his being named a Doctor of the Church: (1) his realistic appreciation for the gravity of sin, which limits human beings and makes them incapable of speaking with God without the mediation of the incarnate Word; (2) his profound dogmatic reflections on the mystery of the holy Trinity; (3) his defense of the sacraments as efficacious mediations of divine grace in the Church; and (4) his devotion to Mary, particularly in her role as mediator between God and humanity.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in St. Gregory among Roman Catholics. Pope St. John Paul II laid the groundwork for this. He mentioned St. Gregory, with approval, in several speeches, in the 1987 encyclical Redemptoris Mater (Mother of the Redeemer), and in the 2001 Apostolic Letter to the Armenian church. The Armenian saint is also mentioned in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (Art. 2678), where his hymns to Mary are praised. In 1996, John Paul II and Armenian Apostolic Catholicos Karekin I issued a common declaration of faith in Christ, in which they agreed that they believe the same things about Christ, even if they express these things in different language—language which in the past unfortunately led to divisions between Catholics and Armenians in the aftermath of the Second Council of Constantinople in 553. Thus, this statement effectively exonerates St. Gregory of any “Christological” errors: even if St. Gregory was not in communion with the Catholic Church, in doctrinal matters there was complete agreement

The monastery where St. Gregory of Narek lived had remained active until 1915 when it was abandoned. It was destroyed by the Turks in the 1950s, and a mosque was built on its site. By naming St. Gregory of Narek a Doctor of the Church, Pope Francis is not only recommending the writings and exemplary life of a great poet and theologian for our intellectual and spiritual enrichment, but also showing the solidarity of the Roman Catholic Church with the Armenian Church­—a very powerful statement in the face of those who continue to deny the Armenian Genocide

Armenians want Turkey to admit the Genocide, not only because it is the truth, but also because admission is necessary for justice. It would also be the first step for reparations. Armenians suffered tremendous losses of life, property, and cultural heritage.

"I urge you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose.

For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers, by Chloe’s people, that there are rivalries among you.

I mean that each of you is saying, “I belong to* Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.”
