Coto de Caza Civics Lesson and Corresponding Quiz

Coto de Caza Civics Lesson and Corresponding Quiz

Ask not who your delegate is – ask: Why do I need one in the first place?

March 17, 2008

The most recent Coto de Caza's CZ Master Association Board of Directors Newsletter contains a civics lesson and corresponding quiz. The premise is that CZ resident should know about representative government and who represents them, leading to the question: Who is your CZ district delegate?

Perhaps the lesson and corresponding quiz should be updated, given that the CZ form of local government is NOT, repeat NOT, representative. Take for instance the most recent elections intend to do away with what critics call a corrupt delegate system:

70% of CZ members who voted support Direct Popular Elections, and

69% of Delegates who voted support Direct Popular Elections and

Allegedly, the majority on the Board supports Direct Popular Elections, so what happened? Direct Popular Elections amendment failed!

Hence, CZ residents should not ask: Who is my district delegate? The question should be: Why do I need a district delegate in the first place – given that by design, the district delegate is to operate in total secrecy and consequent lack of transparency and accountability - delegates do not have to disclose how they vote, and they certainly do not have to vote the will of the residents in their district.

Boy, did you hit that nail on the head. Our current Delegate system is not a representative form of government because they don’t represent anyone but themselves. My delegate will not reveal how he votes. He obviously does not represent me. And, you know as a thinking human being I don’t need someone who was never elected by anybody to cast a vote for me anyway. Joseph Morabito, former member CZ board of directors.
