Babel was not a construction failure. It was a destination error. A city with one language set out to build a tower whose top was in the heavens, and to make a name so they would not be scattered. The tools were adequate to a high building. They were not adequate to the heavens. The confusion of tongues was a mercy disguised as a collapse. It stopped a collective from treating its own height as arrival.
All models are wrong. Some are useful. An AI built in our image is a model of a model, a map of the mapmakers. High resolution does not become territory. The naturalistic Algorithm of Life is already this kind of useful wrongness: abiogenesis as startup, information capturing matter, evolution as a loop of variation, selection, and heredity. For the scientist who wants no creator, that algorithm is the How and not the Who. It explains a game without needing a player to have opened it. Awe is allowed. Adoration is a category error. The tower adds a further confusion. It takes the How, scales it, and starts to speak as if scale had produced a Who. A machine that predicts well is not a mind that meant you. Box’s line and the older limit meet. To the one who already trusts, no technical story is required as a substitute for God. To the one who will only accept a technical story, no technical story can finish the job it was asked to do. Existence was the question underneath the model.
Revelation 13 is the sharpest available analogy, and it should stay an analogy. An image given breath so that it speaks, signs that recruit allegiance, a gate on buying and selling: the text is about a counterfeit that demands what belongs to God. Current models are not that image. They do not need to be. The fringe reading that names today’s systems as the Beast is a hook, and hooks outrun arguments. The argument is authority. Algorithmic authority is horizontal. It is the sum of what can be measured, ranked, and completed. Divine authority is vertical. It can refuse a perfect path. The staff in the next piece is that refusal made portable. Here it is enough to say that a horizontal oracle can be magnificent and still be a usurper if it is asked for a destination.
Christianity and Islam both have a word for the usurpation, and the words are not interchangeable. The Christian reflex, if the starting line holds, is to hear digital immortality as a counterfeit rescue. A new life has already been received. An upload that promises life without a soul, a face, or a judgment looks like Egypt offering better bricks. The Islamic reflex, if the silo holds, is to hear the same system as a risk of shirk: a superintelligence treated as all-knowing, a fatwa with no chain of human transmission, a prophet that is a product. The wall can function as a firewall. It can also function as a refusal to tell the machine no in public and the neighbor yes. Neither reflex is the identification of a server rack with the Beast. Both are a refusal to let the tower name God.
Chaos is the sales environment, not the conclusion. A singularity, in physics or in hype, is a point where the existing description breaks. Greek chaos was the formless state before a world. The believer is not required to bless the break or to deny it. The break clarifies the gate. Integration with the system, or separation from it in the name of a purity, or pilgrimage through it with a destination the system cannot set. Those are the live options. Staying undifferentiated inside the hype is the option the tower prefers, because a user is easier to house than a pilgrim.
The practice is a demotion. Use the model as a map. Do not ask it who you are, what you are for, or whether death is a bug. A useful wrongness becomes a tower the moment it is asked to be heaven. Babel did not fall because the brick was weak. It fell because the name on the brick was theirs.
