In higher education this appears as the slow rewriting of baseline assumptions. Textbooks and core syllabi gradually reframe historical episodes, literary canons, and social norms so that certain moral or political frames arrive as settled common sense rather than claims still open to contest. Hollywood and legacy entertainment supply the parallel drip. Sitcoms and mainstream films introduce specific lifestyles, relationship models, or political priors as ordinary background elements. Over two decades the cumulative effect is that students arrive on campus already treating a manufactured consensus as organic reality. C.S. Lewis’s observation that the philosophy of the schoolroom becomes the philosophy of government in the next generation is operationalized here: the drip is the mechanism.
Concrete institutional examples include multi-decade shifts in campus diversity statements and core-curriculum language. Early iterations were optional or limited; later versions treat the same framing as the default starting point for history, literature, and social-science sequences. PBS LearningMedia and similar teacher-facing resources illustrate the education-flavored version: promotional doorway cards lead with identity framing or “forgotten hero” hooks before primary accomplishment or the subject’s own recorded priorities. One card can be dismissed; a sustained feed of Ken Burns clips, ambassador talking points, and “share with your class” prompts teaches the new first question as weather. The Revolution is entered through a racial or purpose-recode on-ramp rather than through the primary record of accomplishment and stated allegiance.
The result is pre-curated consensus. Students mistake a globally synchronized, institutionally reinforced frame for universal truth. Intellectual atrophy follows because the friction that once forced examination has been backgrounded. ERCP does not need to police every utterance; it simply ensures that the default vocabulary and the default first question already favor the preferred orthodoxy. When later SERCT feeds or AERCT modules arrive, they land on prepared ground.
This tier is the old coat. It is slow, prestige-backed, and difficult to contest in real time because each increment looks modest. By the time the cumulative shift is visible, the generation that absorbed it treats the new baseline as the natural order rather than a delivered product. Inoculation against it requires deliberate reintroduction of primary texts, chronological context, and explicit comparison of the original record against the drip that replaced it.
