Rancho Santa Margarita, CA.  The Ceramics Department in the Division of Fine Arts and Media Technology at Saddleback College today announced its 2^nd Annual Chili Bowl Cook-off on Wednesday, November 7th from 4-8 pm in the Fine Arts complex.

Activities include a chance to sample the varied chili recipes from the Saddleback community and local restaurants, and a dinner of your choice of chili, bread, salad, beer and wine. 

Fun activities include:  a silent auction featuring art from local artists, a sale of student ceramics, a wheel throwing contest, a ring toss contest over hand-crafted ceramic bottles (the prize being the bottle), and a pin the unibrow on Frida contest!

Tickets are $30 general; $15 students and veterans, which includes a hand-crafted bowl to hold your favorite chili and you get to keep the bowl.  Tickets can be purchased by calling (949) 582-4656 (noon-4 Wednesday-Saturday) and online at www.saddleback.edu/arts.

Leavenworth is a city in Chelan County, Washington, United States. It is part of the Wenatchee–East Wenatchee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,074 at the 2000 census. The entire town center is modelled on a Bavarian village. Internationally known high-brow/low-brow artist Rick Reese joins Saddleback College Faculty

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA  – The Division of Fine Arts and Media Technology at Saddleback College announced the addition of internationally known high-brow/low-brow artist Rick Reese as a new addition to its faculty where he will be teaching Intaglio (printmaking) and Relief I-III and Drawing I.

Art Department Co-Chair, Patricia Levin, raved about Rick saying that he “…brings new energy and a contemporary focus to drawing and printmaking at Saddleback College. His enthusiasm for art is contagious, and I know as a working artist he will be a fantastic role model for our students,” while Art Department Co-Chair, Veronica Obermeyer, stated, “We are excited and proud to have Rick Reese join our department. Rick’s expansive industry and teaching experience will further strengthen our core foundation drawing classes and printmaking.”

Born in Southern California but raised in Northern California, Rick got his start working in the comic book industry (The Simpsons & Futurama) in the early 2000s. The next few years would see him working as a designer and illustrator in the toy industry, making graphics for action sports companies, and working for clients and galleries across Southern California. 

As interest in his gallery work began to grow, Rick was invited to participate in shows both nationally and internationally garnering recognition for his densely-painted pieces that draw inspiration from both “high” and “low” brow culture, occupying the gray area between the two. Shortly after beginning the move to becoming a gallery artist, Rick began teaching at Cal State Long Beach and soon thereafter started working on a master’s degree in order to focus his work and reach a new audience. It was during that time of intensive studio work that Rick began to explore printmaking as a valuable part of his creative process and he began incorporating it into his art. Freely combining traditionally separate disciplines, and continuing to blur traditional and contemporary art practice have naturally been part of both his artwork and teaching experience.

High art is considered artwork that shows a particular style done by a master or innovator, such as Picasso, who had many styles different from others who were painting at the time. He did something completely new that opened the door to more abstract art.

Low art is more like folk art or art done for the masses, such as the Elvis portrait on a velvet canvass.

Renowned Bassist and Composer Jeff Denson’s at Saddleback College

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA.  Jazz Studies at Saddleback College announced that it will  present world-renowned bassist and composer Jeff Denson with his quartet in the McKinney Theatre on Monday, September 10^th at 7 pm. 

	The music of the Jeff Denson Quartet pushes through the boundaries of conventions in music.  By inventively mixing the world of composed and improvised music, Denson creates a unique language of his own where intoxicating melodies and rhythms transport the listener away to unknown lands where vivid hues of tone paints the aural canvas of the inner ear.

The music is steeped in the jazz tradition where the propulsive rhythms are the heartbeat of the music and the musicians are master improvisers of the harmonic structures, song forms and melodic invention.  The music diverges from the jazz tradition and creates its unique fingerprint in the handling of the juxtaposition of the composed and improvised material and the roles and uses of the instruments within the compositions.  The quartet consists of Denson (bass and vocals), Ralph Alessi (trumpet), Florian Weber (piano) and Gerald Cleaver (drums).  “A secret masterpiece!” – Jazzthing, Germany

Curricula include Improvisation, Jazz Composition and Arranging, Jazz History Syllabus, Jazz History Audio, Jazz History Podcast, Jazz Piano, Saddleback Big Band, Jazz Lab Ensemble, and Combos.  Students in Jazz Studies at Saddleback College have transferred to prestigious institutions including University of Southern California, Eastman School of Music, Berkeley School of Music, Cal State Northridge, UCLA, Cal State Fullerton, University of California at San Diego, and other regional institutions.  Some of our alumni have gone on to play professionally with Frank Zappa, Diana Ross, and other high-profile artists and organizations.

Surf’s Art Free, with a Message at Saddleback College

Rancho Santa Margarita, , CA – Bob Rickerson, Gallery Director of The Saddleback College Art Gallery is pleased to presentLiquid Chapters, an instructional look into the world and art of Damian Fulton, on September 4-27, 2012 in the Saddleback College Art Gallery.  Admission is free and open to the public.

Invitation Folly

Liquid Chapters, the first retrospective of Damian Fulton’s artistic journey, includes early commissions and comic book art through recent gallery oil paintings and surfboards. Growing up in the ” OC,” Damian Fulton developed a love for drawing and the chaotic coastal culture of Southern California.  He got through Cal State Fullerton painting his way on custom cars and murals. Hired right after college in 1982 by Ocean Pacific to create the poster for the OP Pro Surf Contest, he later developed comic strips “Radical Rick” for BMX Plus Magazine and “The Shred Brothers” for Snowboarder Magazine. An eclectic visual artist, Damian has directed commercials for advertising giant Ogilvy and Mather, developed animation for Marvel Productions, and has painted for Disney. Bob Rickerson, the gallery’s curator, best describes Fulton’s work as “Surf art with a social commentary.”

Gallery hours are Monday – Wednesday from noon-4 pm; Thursday evenings 4-8 pm. An artists’ reception will be held Thursday, August 30th from 5-8 pm.  The gallery will also be open Saturday, September 8th from 10 am to 2 pm The Saddleback College Art Gallery is one of South Orange County’s primary outlets for creative expression in traditional and conceptual art.  Exhibitions featuring works by local, regional and nationally known artists are presented from September to July.  The Art Gallery is an important part of the instructional program.  Students enrolled in the gallery display and exhibition classes learn how to plan, design, install and organize gallery space through art exhibitions. The Jungle is Jigglin’ with the Jungle Book Kids at Saddleback

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA – The Saddleback College Community Education and Performing Arts have come together again this summer to present MainStage Kids’ production of Disney’s The Jungle Book Kids on August 3-5 in the McKinney Theatre. 

Directed by Katie Rubin, with choreography by Janette Bent and Musically directed by Lex Leigh, this classic family musical will delight audiences of all ages.  The jungle is jumpin’ with jazz in this exciting Disney classic!  Join Mowgli, Baloo, King Louie and the gang as they swing their way through madcap adventures and thwart the ferocious tiger, Shere Khan.  Specially adapted from the beloved film, this musical includes all your favorite Disney tunes like The Bare Necessities and I Wan’na be Like You.

Saddleback Civic Light Opera Season Finale: Dames at Sea

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA – Saddleback Civic Light Opera closes on June 24th with an audience-pleaser, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and another song and dance musical,   Dames at Sea - book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller and music by Jim Wise, is an affectionate spoof of the grand and glorious Busby Berkeley movie musicals of the 1930s. 

Performances are at the McKinney Theatre on July 13th through the 29th.  Directed and choreographed by K. C. Gussler and musically directed by Jimmy Vann, this all song-and-dance musical will delight audience members of all ages.   

Small-town girl Ruby arrives in the Big Apple with only her tap shoes, a song in her heart, and a burning desire to become a Broadway star. She falls in love with Dick, a sailor who just happens to be a songwriter. They can sing a lovely duet – but can they save a Broadway musical when calamity strikes?  This old-fashioned tap extravaganza will charm and delight with catchy tunes like Broadway Baby, Choo-Choo Honeymoon, The Sailor of My Dreams and Dames at Sea.
