Get a Super Jazzed Combo at Saddleback College December 10, 2007

The jazz combo at Saddleback College bring their myriad, stylistic and creative diversity to the McKinney Theatre on Monday, December 10 at 8:00 p.m. This lively concert features original music and tributes to seminal jazz masters.

Tickets are $10 general; $7 student/seniors. Call the ticket office at 949-582-4656 to order your tickets.

The most important aspect of any jazz studies program is the combo program. At Saddleback College , the jazz studies program focuses on the true nature of jazz music. Style, improvising skills, interplay among members and composition are all addressed in a supportive chamber music environment.

Saddleback College is located at 28000 Marguerite Pkwy in Mission Viejo , just east of Interstate 5 at the Avery Parkway exit. Parking is available in Lot 12. Take Avery Parkway to Marguerite Parkway turn left to the second traffic light, which is Saddleback’s Marguerite entrance. Turn right into the campus and take the second left to “ Theatre Circle ,” turning right into Lot 12.

The CZ Gate Access Process Does Not Prevent Crime of Opportunity, Rather it Provides an Opportunity for Crime

Today’s WSJ article titled Wealthy Home Invasions Puts the Wealthy on Alert, Lax Security Often Open Doors to Increasingly Brazen Crimes; the Buffets Uninvited Guest, echoes the message often delivered by the CotoBuzz Journal: The CZ Gate Access Process Does Not Prevent Crime of Opportunity, Rather it Provides an Opportunity for Crime

The article makes the argument that the reason for an increase in home invasions is because the “the numbers of rich people with homes to plunder has risen fast”, but more importantly, traditional targets such as banks, stores and offices are now more fortified than ever.

The article goes on to urge wealthy and high profile individuals to step up security at home. Among the recommendations are:

Do not accept unscheduled deliveries
Install voice-video intercom system
Order background checks on all employees and contractors.


Coto de Caza Gate access control as currently implemented is a waste. There are those who argue that the Sheriff is responsible for crime and vandalism – missing the crime of opportunity concept altogether.

Consider the attempted rape in December 2006: The CZ BOD was quick to say that the perpetrator was not a CZ resident – however, for all practical purposes, the fact that he was allowed in with no questions asked, makes him a “CZ insider”.

The 10 principles of crime opportunity

1. Opportunities play a role in causing all crime, not just common property crime

2. Crime opportunities are highly specific

3. Crime opportunities are concentrated in time and space – Dramatic differences are found from one address to another even in a high crime area.

4. Crime opportunities depend on everyday movements of activity – Offenders and targets shift according to their routine activities (eg. work, school leisure). For example burglars visit houses in the day when the occupants are out at work or school.

5. One crime produces the opportunities for another – For example, a successful break-in may encourage the offender to return in the future or a youth who has his bike stolen may feel justified in taking someone else's as a replacement.

6. Some products offer more tempting crime opportunities – For example easily accessible electrical items such as DVD players and mobile phones are attractive to burglars and robbers.

7. Social and technological changes produce new crime opportunities – Products are most vulnerable in their 'growth' and 'mass marketing' stages, as demand for them is at its highest.

8. Crime can be prevented by reducing opportunities – The opportunity reducing methods of situational crime prevention cut across everyday life, though they can be tailored to specific situations.

9. Reducing opportunities does not usually displace crime

Think of Malintzin as the Benedict Arnold - Arnold originally fought for American independence from the British Empire as a general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War until he obtained a bone, err.. command of the American fort at West Point, New York and, opting for a switcharoo, then plotted unsuccessfully to surrender it to the British

Malintzin was used to interpret between Cortés and the Aztecs. Malintzin learned of several plans by natives to destroy the small Spanish army, and she alerted Cortés of the danger and even played along with the natives in order to lead them into traps.

Given the unexpected coup at the CZ board, the question is, is Malintzin in Coto’s midst, or is this a local version of the Treasonator?

Bringing in Hugo Chavez to Coto de Caza to negotiate the release of direct democracy is like asking President Clinton to help clean up the DC Intern program!

The Coto de Caza governing body has been in disarray for quite some time culminating in the resignation of board president S. Zipperman because of an alleged “political assassination” plot.

Matters have quickly turned to a hostage crisis. Some have argued that perhaps the best person to resolve the crisis is Venezuela president Hugo Sanchez, after all, Chavez is negotiating on behalf of the Colombian government with leftist rebels holding dozens of hostages.

Others are not so sure, pointing out the hostage situation originated with the Varo/Mezger administration some five years back – even before the California state law was changed in favor of direct democracy, they point out that Messrs Varo and Mezger would not even consider proposals to ban a corrupt delegate system hence holding direct democracy hostage.

They also point out that President Hugo Chavez already controls the High Court, the National Electoral Council, the National Assembly and the only thing left were the elections and the possibility of regime change. In the new constitution being championed by Chavez, the first thing is still there, but the second is not. Chávez can stay in power forever – bringing in Chavez to Coto de Caza to negotiate the release of direct democracy ( held hostage by the CZ board of directors) is like asking President Clinton to help clean up the DC Intern program!.

The CZ Master Association board of directors has been so dysfunctional since Messrs Varo and Mezger joined, that it is meritorious of a prominent role in the infamous reality TV shows – the producers where allowed total control of a general board meeting, while the pair denied CHP management a few minutes of a board meeting to deliver a public safety awareness message.

The CZ board president resigned because of an alleged political assassination plot, prompting former member of the board, Joe Morabito to ask, what is happening?, followed by our response:

Hello All: With the resignation of Steve Zipperman as a result of what he termed “a political assassination” and obvious bad feelings, the rest of us are left to wonder what the heck is happening? Is Mezger, who really should be gone, still on the Board or not? Most important, I keep saying that CZ Board Members should be removed from office for malfeasance not political differences. I believe that Jerry Mezger met the malfeasance test for a variety of reasons all of which I have citied many times, however, as far as I know Zipperman did nothing wrong requiring his removal. So what is the story?



Folks, CZ Board Members need to work together to get big things done. Board Members can disagree over issues; but once there are three votes to make something happen, it is time to move on to the next topic and/or to continue fighting the good fight with new facts in the future as they come up to convince other Board Members that a change is needed. Our Members need stability on our Board not Machiavellian machinations. As long as Board Members act in accordance with our governing documents, the laws governing HOA’s and their fiduciary responsibility, they are on firm ground. When they fail to do so, they get themselves in trouble. JM



P.S. I served with about 10 different Board Members and for the most part we got along and actually had some fun even when we disagreed on issues.

Excellent question – more intriguing when the resignation is alleged to be for 'political assassination” reasons - coming from a self described professional fighter, your Machiavellian machinations scenario is amplified.

We recently touched, in this forum, what is and is not legally allowed to be discussed in closed and open board meetings – an example that there continues to be residual nefarious elements within the CZ board.

You may recall that Varo’s last pledge was that the new (Zippermans/Yocham’s) board’s highest priority was to continue work on the Hoffman report (even though the Orange County board of supervisors has denied having ever agreed to fund it) – the new board has been silent on the subject, however.

Now consider that according to the latest letter from the CZ board, there is a chance CZ residents will continue to get stuck with Varo and a corrupt delegate system, in lieu of direct elections.

So, apparently the only stability in the CZ board is Varo's presence - who by some accounts, has been impressed with Yocham’s rise in CZ politics – So it is now up to the three newest members to make the difference and right the sinking ship: Vince Hylka, Bruce Banigan, Vince Rossini.

The question is whether it is a case of Veni, Vedi, Vinci, or simply Vince, Brucy, Vince? - with Varo/Mezger pulling the strings in the background!

A good number of us recall the recent (Jyllands-Posten ) Muhammad cartoons debacle, which began shortly after twelve editorial cartoons depicted the Islamic prophet Muhammad, were published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten on 30 September 2005. The newspaper announced that this publication was an attempt to contribute to the debate regarding criticism of Islam and self-censorship: Danish Muslim organizations, who objected to the depictions, responded by holding public protests attempting to raise awareness of Jyllands-Posten's publication. The controversy deepened when further examples of the cartoons were reprinted in newspapers in more than fifty other countries. This led to protests across the Muslim world, some of which escalated into violence with police firing on the crowds, including setting fire to the Norwegian and Danish Embassies in Syria, storming European buildings, and desecrating the Danish and German flags in Gaza City.

More recently, saying that Islam is evil in Finland and the rest of the Scandinavian countries, can be considered hate speech, and is actively being prosecuted.

On this side of the pond, gay activists recently desecrated a Catholic Church in San Francisco – apparently not an issue for re-elected Mayor Gavin. On September 4, 2007 a Muslim woman, represented by the ACLU sued the sheriff because her religious rights were violated when deputies forced her to remove her head scarf – even though the woman was arrested for parole violation.

The current Los Angeles Police Antiterrorism Plan is drawing fire, despite the overwhelming data on actual terrorists, because it is tantamount to ethnic profiling, according to critics - To what Deputy Chief Michael P. Downing says that these “people don't really understand what we are doing.”

Linda Gehringer plays well the immoral, feminist character of Sister Aloysious Beavier, bent on doing all she can to bring down Father Brendan Flynn, played by James Joseph O’Neil. In the end, a most promising teacher Sister James, played by Rebecca Mozo, , making here SCR debut is but collateral damage. This SCR production of Doubt, a Parable, showcases the artist’s talents, including Mrs. Muller, as played by Kimberly Scott. As to the anti-Catholic message, what is the problem? Now that Zipperman has resigned as president of the CZ board and Yocham has been appointed president, will the new board be known as the Yo Hylka board, or simply the YOH board?



Why is it that Bruce Banigan was appointed (during last nights CZ board meeting) to take Zipperman's place on the board, when residents had not been informed of a pending resignation?



Perhaps for the same reason the board had been mum about Mezger’s status for the last two months? Is this all related to the CC&R changes being considered (as described in the latest CZ master association newsletter): direct elections and/or maintaining a corrupt delegate system?



On the other hand, the Senator Craig Syndrome is no longer an option, given that another Vince was appointed to fill Jerry Mezger's seat. Where is Varo in all this?



The more things change, the more things remain the same!

Undersheriff Jo Ann Galisky on Tuesday requested County Auditor/Controller David

Sundstrom to review Sheriff Carona’s recent travel and spending accounts. The request

was not based on any suspicion of misspending but it was an act of due diligence in

response to questions raised by Supervisor John Moorlach, according to Galiski



Undersheriff Galisky said that the scope of the audit ordered Wednesday by the

county oversight committee is unclear but she is confident in the quality of work the

department’s financial services division provides.



Rick Dostal, director of Financial/Administrative Services Division of the Sheriff’s

Department said the county routinely audits the department’s finances and to date he is

unaware of any findings of corruption or intentional misconduct. He added that the Sheriff’s Department has 21 budgets with annual expenditures of

$707 million.



“We run a transparent operation at the Sheriff’s Department and invite the scrutiny

of auditors so long as the demands do not interfere with our mandate to provide public

protection. We will provide all of the assistance we are able to the county auditors,” said

Undersheriff Galisky. “It is worth mention that none of the federal charges demonstrate

any systemic misuse or abuse of department funds. My hope is that the auditor will give

top priority to the review I recommended to him on Tuesday,” she said.



“I believe the concerns and questions raised could have been easily resolved through a

simple call to the department, however, I welcome this review in order to put the public’s

mind at ease,” Undersheriff Galisky said.

Saddleback College ’s International Guest Artist Series welcomes Laguna Ballet’s premiere of The Nutcracker on the McKinney Theatre stage, after 22 years in Laguna Beach , December 13-26.




Over 75 Orange County students come together each year, under the direction of Artistic Director Shery Gilbert, to present this full-length Nutcracker. The lead role of Clara will be played by Meghan McDonough and Sophia Romagnano. Guest artists are Miranda Weese, former New York City Ballet principal and current principal with Pacific Northwest Ballet, and Anton Pankevich of Pacific Northwest Ballet. Lauren Eggersten, Youth American Grand Prix Regional Semi Finalist, returns in her role as Sugar Plum Fairy along with all of the talented Laguna Ballet dancers.






Laguna Ballet is the non-profit junior ballet company of Laguna Dance Theatre, comprised of children ages 5-18, founded by Shery Gilbert. Laguna Ballet in conjunction with the school, Laguna Dance Theatre, provides an exceptional environment where each student receives the special care and attention needed to become a self confident dancer. A solid base in technique is provided to aspiring professional dancers, and to those who simply want the best dance experience, to raise their self-esteem, develop discipline and achieve grace. Tabasco Flooding 2007 Appeal

Public Service Announcement- Tabasco Flooding 2007 Appeal







November 5, 2007

In an effort to respond to the needs of the over 800,000 displaced flood victims the recent flooding in the Mexican state of Tabasco, the International Community Foundation (ICF) has initiated a campaign to raise monies to provide safe drinking water and direct aid to reduce the spread of cholera and other waterborne diseases through the foundation’s International Water Emergency Relief Fund which provides immediate relief to communities and victims of natural disasters in need of safe drinking water and health and sanitation systems in Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.

All donations made to ICF's International Water Emergency Relief Fund will go to benefit the Mexican Red Cross delegations in Tabasco to provide emergency relief to the flooding victims in those states.
Without question, the Tabasco flood is the worst natural disaster in Mexico’s recent history with its long term community based impacts paralleling the 1985 Mexico. So, ICF encourages donors to give generously to those in critical need of assistance.

California now has yet one more chance to prove that its justice system is not just another fata morgana. First there is OJ’s mangue glove and most recently, music producer Phil Spector’s murder trial ending in a mistrial, not to mention the Hilton debacle or the looney Lohan incident.

Now, Sheriff Michael Carona is indicted apparently based solely on testimony obtained form admitted tax evaders and former top aides. This morning, Orange County Sheriff Carona after pleading not guilty to federal public corruption, conspiracy and witness tampering charges, emphatically stated he does not plan to step down, “… because I am not guilty", he said. He also noted that "In America, all of us as Americans, even the sheriff of Orange County, has the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty”. Going over the details of the indictment, Sheriff Carona’s forceful self-defense and the assistant sheriffs interviewed by the Real Orange program in KOCE, one can safely say that in this case, perhaps Sheriff Carona either did not read Mark Twain or simply dismissed his warning: “If you pick a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you; that is the principal difference between a man and a dog”

Depleted Saddleback College Speech Team Places Third

Undefeated debate team of Jabarri/Blackburn/Kulp with 9-0 record

The Saddleback College Forensics Team finished 3rd at the Lancer/Watson Tournament held at Pasadena City College on October 27-28. This was the second tournament of the 2007-2008 school year and due to several situations including the fires only 8 students were able to attend, which is half of the team. They are optimistic about the future when in full force.

“We had a wonderful showing and victories in very diverse events. I am especially impressed by the level of commitment on both the part of the students and coaches. The highlight of the tournament was our undefeated debate team of Jabarri/Blackburn/Kulp. This team was undefeated at 9-0! The win was unprecedented in the 12 year History of our program! This was a unifying tournament for all. Because of extenuating circumstances, less than half of the students on the team were in attendance however, every student on the team took home an award! The other half will join their success at the next tournament on November 30 to December 2 in Los Angeles ,” said Larry Radden, director of the Saddleback team.

“I am extremely excited about our students this year. They are committed, intelligent, hardworking and I believe that all of their efforts will be rewarded at upcoming tournaments” said associate faculty member Heidi Mueller-Ochoa.

If you side with Sheriff Carona’s political opponents, or if you simply dislike law and order representatives, then you must have had a field day yesterday, as the Man himself sat handcuffed in a federal courtroom, disgracefully having spent hours in a cell.

Also handcuffed were Carona’s wife as well as lawyer and “longtime mistress” Debra Hoffman. While the Carona’s have arguably top-notch legal counsel, the attorney and alleged mistress has public defense, perhaps as a last humiliation straw?

Perhaps an excellent illustration why it is not a good idea to trust in man, for “there is a way that seems right unto a man, but ends in death” Pr. 16:25

The question is whether all the Sheriff’s Horses and All the Sheriff’s Men, can put the Sheriff back together again?
It is the mistress angle that I find most interesting. Maybe it was a good thing his wife was handcuffed because I would think she would want to kill him aside from the graft issues. What a soap opera. Joe Morabito

Gets even curiouser…..the husband of the attorney and alleged Sheriff’s “longtime mistress”, Robert Schroff was also present.

Consider that Betsy Pickle’s ( the Scripps Howard News Service) review of the family movie, Bella, writes : Bella “…is about people making connections, but it's so far removed from how real people behave that it feels disconnected”.

Apparently in the world of Reality TV, how the Sheriff’s extended family gets along in federal court is what Betsy Pickle looks for in “real people”. Buzz
