Rancho Santa Margarita, CA – It has been six weeks since three people ventured
out to the Camino Real Playhouse in hopes of becoming the next Jerry Seinfeld
or Ellen DeGeneres. During that time, they have learned basic joke writing skills, stage technique, and how to
hopefully handle stage fright and hecklers. Now, on Saturday, May
|
19th, at the Camino Real Playhouse 31776 El Camino Real, 8:00 pm, they get to show their friends, family and the world just how funny they have become. It’s the “Students of Stand-up” Comedy Graduation Showcase being held in San Juan Capistrano.
Longtime Orange County resident Tom Riehl, teaches the
beginning comedy class – a veteran stand-up comedian and who has worked with
the likes of Bob Saget, Paula Poundstone, Alonzo Bodden, Shawn Wayans, and
James P. Connolly as well as musical acts Berlin, Three Dog Night and David
Pack of Ambrosia. He was also a winner on ABC’s America’s Funniest People” and
host of the cooking show “Food Rules”.
Riehl, who began his comedy career 18 years ago, feels its
time to give something back after all these years. “When I see these people walk into class for the first time, I
immediately remember how I felt when I first started. They really deserve a lot
of credit for sticking it out and doing something most people would never even
consider.”
Graduating performers in the May 19 show are Laurie Jacobs,
Frankie Pray, and Walt Stevens. While
none of the students have ever performed stand-up before, Riehl is convinced
people will be surprised at how funny they really are. In addition to the students, Riehl will be
the evening’s emcee along with professional headliner Stephanie Blum to close
out the evening. Blum, is a former psychologist from Brooklyn and mother of
three who couldn't care less. Her sarcastic irreverence is what makes her
universally adored by audiences at places like the Stardust in Las Vegas, on
Country Music Television’s Funniest Videos, HBO’s Comedy Minutes and many more.
