Rancho Santa
Margarita, CA - – On Saturday, September 1 at approximately 6:45 pm
Byron Scott, 49
years old, died while in custody at the Orange County Sheriff's Department jail
ward located at UCI Medical Center in Orange.
Scott’s death comes
hours after LAPD Chief Charlie Beck reassigned five officers
after detectives with the department’s Force Investigation Division found
problems with some tactics used during last month’s arrest of a 35-year-old mother of two who was allegedly
stomped and kicked in the genitals during an arrest last month.
LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said:
"I take all in-custody death investigations very seriously and directed the officers involved be removed from field duties until further details are known, including what part intoxicants and physical conditions contributed"
According to the
Orange County Sheriff’s (OCSD) office, Scott’s death does not appear suspicious.
Just like in the
LAPD case, standard protocols require the District Attorney, in this case, the Orange
County District Attorney's Office (OCDA) to handle the investigation. An
autopsy is pending by the Coroner's Office
Scott was arrested
on August 21 by Orange County Probation for a probation violation.
