58 Winners in Obama’s Prison Commutation Sweepstakes – More Questions than answers.

Posted By CotoBlogzz

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA – President Obama today granted commutations to 58 individuals, 18 of whom had been sentences to life in prison. Deputy Attorney General Sally Q. Yates puts it this way:
“As a result of the President’s actions today, 58 more individuals, 18 of whom had been sentenced to life in prison, have been granted a second chance to lead productive and law-abiding lives.”   Nothing wrong with that.  Something similar was done with Gitmo prisoners, and where did they end up?  Why only 58?  Why not 50, or 500?

We are in violent agreement that prison reform is required.  Particularly as it pertains to the high cost of incarceration being funded by taxpayers.  Should not the perpetrators bear the economic burden?  Should prison reform be unilateral?  Should prisons offer better benefits than those the average tax payer gets:  Free health insurance, free gym pass, free three meals a day and so on, for example.

To be clear, Deputy Attorney General Sally Q. Yates adds:  Our clemency work is continuing as part of our broader efforts to effectuate criminal justice reform and ensure fairness and proportionality in sentencing.  That includes supporting the bipartisan efforts in Congress to pass criminal justice reform legislation, working with the U.S. Sentencing Commission, and continuing the department’s successful Smart on Crime initiative.

More questions than answers

The DOJ and this administration do not necessarily have a good track records when it comes to fairness:

President Obama regularly lectures the nation about not jumping to conclusions, when he himself often jumps to conclusions:  Remember the beer summit?  Remember Ferguson?  Remember the Ft. Hood workplace violence?

Comprehensive prison reform is required, but it must come from outside the system, a-la-Trump.  The system, otherwise known as the parasitic bureaucracy has a vested interested in self-preservation and expansion.  Other questions remain, for example:  What is the commutation being offered to the victims? Whose heads are going to roll if these lucky  individuals do not take advantage of the second chance being given?  What is the expected recividism rate?  Will these individuals be monitored?  If not, why not?  If yes, who is responsible?
